Coaches Corner with Basketball Coach Lucas Chapman

Tuesday, December 11th, 2012

The ReSporter: What are your thoughts as you look over the first third of your season and what are some things that need work and what are pleasant surprises?

Coach Chapman: Obviously, we started off slow, going 0-4, but since then we have played a lot better and are improving each time we go out.

We still need to work on executing better on offense, especially when it gets late in a game, and we need a bucket.

Our patience and shot selection will help that a bunch.

I have been really pleased with our defensive effort. The guys have bought in to playing defense and rebounding and those two things are what have turned our season around.

The ReSporter: Will you use a small and big lineup against certain type of teams?

Coach Champman: Basketball is a game of match-ups. If we play a team where we think we have an advantage going big, then we will do that and the same goes with using a small lineup.

We are fortunate to have a few guys that can play multiple positions and that helps us mix and match who we have on the floor. The more versatile we can be, the better.

Canyon Lake Comes up Short in Loss to Randolph, 32-30

Saturday, December 8th, 2012

Canyon Lake came up short again against Randolph in another Championship game, this time losing, 32-30.

Last week, CL lost by 16 at the Marion Tourney and so if you are into moral victories, then this was one you can hang your hat on.

“Our defense was real good,” Head Coach Lucas Chapman said. “We need to find ways to score and find ways to win.”

For five minutes starting their end of the third quarter, the Hawks could not buy a basket.

Canyon Lake had just one field goal with 30 seconds left in the third quarter till the end of this contest.

The chances of only losing by two points will give you an idea of how much, other parts, of CL’s game is clicking, especially on the defensive side of their game.

Some of that intensity was lost when Isaac Pruna went down with an ankle sprain in that second half.

The Hawks had a chance after forcing a turnover with four seconds left in regulation, but a Andrew Riali three pointer was short of the mark.

Canyon Lake will now travel to Comfort next Tuesday and then another chance to meet Randolph in their tournament next weekend.

CL Girls Win first Tournament in Victory over Blanco, 30-28

Saturday, December 8th, 2012

Canyon Lake Lady Hawks won their first Basketball Tournament in front of their home crowd, beating Blanco Panthers, 30-28.

The Hawks jumped out to a six point lead to start this game holding Blanco scoreless with a little over two minutes to play in the first quarter.

CL was ahead up until only 43 seconds were left in the first half.

Blanco would extend that lead to five points to start the second half and then the Twin Towers took this game over.

Amber Ramsey and Katie Williams would be instrumental for the Hawks as they dominated offensively  scoring every point in the second half.

Blanco was able to keep the lead up until Ramsey found Williams inside the free throw line, where Williams would score giving the Hawks their first lead since the second quarter.

CL Hawks Win Razor Thin Game Over Somerset, 48-47

Friday, December 7th, 2012

Caleb Kreiger Scored 26 points in Win over Somerset

Canyon Lake will get another crack at Randolf as these two schools will meet for the second consecutive week as foes fighting for a Tournament Championship.

The Hawks punched their ticket for this rematch when they held on for a, 48-47 victory over Somerset Bulldogs in a nightcap on the first day of the Canyon Lake Classic.

This game had 15 lead changes, as each team traded punches all night long trying to get an advantage.

Somerset’s largest lead was only two points and CL had a seven point lead in their second quarter, 18-11.

Senior Caleb Kreiger had no problem establishing the inside as he hit at a 82% rate from the field through the first half scoring 20 points.

The second half, Somerset put a couple of Bulldogs on Kreiger forcing the Hawks to get more players involved.

“I had a size advantage,” Kreiger started. “We were beating their press, but then in the second half they put more players on me and I had to find other players.”

Canyon Lake started the fourth quarter with a one point lead, when Kreiger hit his first shot stretching that lead to three, 41-38.

Somerset would answer with five straight points, seizing the lead again, 43-41.

Paul Davis took his next rebound and went coast to coast for a tying score at the five minute mark.

A couple of minutes of blank shooting by both clubs, put this game in pressure mode when the Bulldogs broke the tie with under three minutes in regulation, 45-43.

Hawks Beat a Tiger, 42-32 in First CL Tournament Game

Friday, December 7th, 2012

Canyon Lake Boy’s won their first CL Tournament game in front of a pack house against Floresville JV, 42-32.

The Hawks withstood a cold spell while the Tigers closed the gap to three points late in the third quarter.

During this cold spell, Floresville scored 11 straight points to cut a 29-15 lead down to 29-26.

Even thought the Hawk Gym was packed with students on this Friday afternoon, only a fraction realized that their was a basketball game going on.

CL responded with or without the crowd and increased their lead back to a final 10 point win.

Doug Hubnik was high point with nine points while being joined in the scoring book with six other Hawks.

“Our shot selection has to be better,” Head Coach Lucas Chapman said. “We drive into traffic and then put up a tougher shot, than if we just ran our offense a couple more times through to get a more open chance.”

Canyon Lake will face Somerset on Friday night for a chance to play for a championship on Saturday.

Lady Hawks (10-2) Beat Stacey Eagles, 45-17

Thursday, December 6th, 2012

Canyon Lake beat Stacey Eagles for the second time this season during their second game of the round robin tournament, 45-17.

Now the Hawks will take on Blanco this Saturday at 9am, as both teams will be playing for first place after winning both games this Thursday.

Canyon Lake had many players in this game and was finding it hard to keep pressure on the Eagles.

Amber Ramsey had her second double-double on the day with 13 points and 12 rebounds.

Olivia Flores was another Hawk that finished with double figures finishing with 12 points.

Ramsey pitched a tent underneath as she dominated the much smaller opponent for the second time this year.

Canyon Lake will have their work cut out for them against Blanco, as their unblemished home record will be tested.

“We were sloppy today,” Head Coach Mary Beth Gallagher said. “We are going to work on our intensity and try to get it back, matching Blanco’s level of intensity will be our main goal.”

Lady Hawks Win Tourney Game over Lytle, 39-29

Thursday, December 6th, 2012

Canyon Lake (9-2) won their first game in the round robin tournament in the Hawk Gym this Thursday morning, 39-29.

Hustle defense was evident throughout the contest as Lytle Pirates were held on the plank for most of this game.

The Hawks had most of their 29 turnovers in the middle two quarters, which happened to be the two quarters that CL did not outscore Lytle.

Katie Williams and Amber Ramsey both finished the game with double-doubles.

Ramsey had nine of her 15 rebounds in the final quarter and finished with 10 points, while Williams had 18 points and 11 rebounds.

Williams’ 18 points moved her up into a tie with Ashley Pfaff in scoring with both now holding at 493 career points.

Pfaff was a key player three years ago during CL’s push into their playoff run. Pfaff played just one season giving you an idea of her worth that season. Lytle was the team that CL played in that playoff game.

Tiffany Tschoepe is next holding onto number one in scoring with 515 points, Williams should be able to pass that mark during the next two games.

Dulce Brown finished with a good all around game with four assists and steals in the game.

In CL’s best two quarters without turnovers, the Hawks outscored Lytle by 14 points.
