Bracken Christian will fight another epic battle with Abilene Christian Panthers this coming Saturday in Zephyr, Texas.

Last year, the Warrior’s season ended against this eventual TAPPS Champion, by four points and only three yards from what would of been a different outcome.

The Panthers returned three offensive and defensive starters from that team and have done a good job of keeping their mojo going, as they have only one loss this season to a UIL Water Valley team.

Abilene did have to replace their Quarterback from last season and Michael Avila has done an admirable job taking over those responsibilities.

Other players that you will notice during this contest; first on the defensive side of the line.

Trevor Tyson will be patrolling the backfield and two defensive ends that might be star material in J.D. DosSantos and Samai Massaquoi. These two players were pivotable in last year’s game when holding a very potent Bracken team to 28 points.

The last time BCS has been held to a point total lower was in their final game in 2009 against eventual TAPPS Champion Greenville Christian which held the Warriors to 24 points.

CL Boy’s Hoops Still a Work in Progress, Lose 65-54

Sunday, November 18th, 2012

Canyon Lake is still a work in progress as they lost to a very athletic team in Stacey last Friday night at Hawk Gym.

The game started and ended with some exciting play at both ends of the court.

CL started with a press and ended with a press.

In between, a maize set in and Stacey slowly increased their lead to as much as 16 points in the third quarter.

Caleb Kreiger started strong with 6 straight points, but then some point blank shots just could not find the bottom of the basket and that caused that deficit to increase.

Paul Davis was a spark plug for the Hawks as he poured in 19 points in the loss.

Davis was the only player to hit a basket in that third quarter as he had 10 of those 12 points.

When asked about how he is viewing this season after a rough go at it last year, “Consistency with my shot, I just have to perfect it and get it (shot) down during the game,” Davis said. “I was able to create space and I got a chance to run the offense and execute the offense more.”

However, Davis also fell victim to three turnovers in a row in the second quarter that allowed a run for Stacey, “I need to try and stay calm when I’m under pressure, it kind of freaked out on that and I need to work on keeping calm and poised.”

Canyon Lake fought back to within eight points in the fourth quarter, when the Hawks installed their press again to get some easy shots.

“I have to trust it (the press) a little more,” Head Coach Lucas Chapman lamented. “Especially a team like that, the more we ork on it and I will have more confidence. We are still trying to figure out our identity and play up tempo. Offensively we found some pick and roll stuff with Caleb (Kreiger) and found out some guys who can help offensively.”

Canyon Lake is still a work in progress and improvement will need to be the key as pre-district games will certainly allow you to see what to have confidence in.

 Score by Quarter 1 2 3 4 Final
 Stacey 22 16 16 11 65
 Canyon Lake 18 9 12 15 54
 Scoring:
 Davis-19, Kreiger-15, Hubnik-11, Faulkner-3, McIntire-3,

CLJV Boys Beat Stacey, 50-34

Sunday, November 18th, 2012

Canyon Lake Junior Varsity Basketball team pulled away from Stacey in the third quarter after hitting for 70% from the field.

That quarter allowed the Hawks the separation needed to coast for a 16 point win, 50-34.

The first quarter, CLJV was not in sync, as they were only able to get eight shots off. When shooting 50% for a quarter, you will usually like to get more chances at the basket.

A two point lead was not a good indicator on how this game might transpire.

Good defense helped Canyon Lake increase that two point lead up to seven points going into halftime.

The third quarter was when CL got their bearings, while shooting a lofty percentage and big Sean Nolan setting up shop underneath the basket for what proved to be the deciding quarter in this game.

Nolan finished with 10 rebounds and altered many more shots that gave the Hawks that elusive momentum.

“Just trying to get rebounds and put backs,” the 6’5″ Nolan bellowed. “This was just our second game and we need to work on our shots.”

Well said, from a man that was twice the size, of this reporter, as this reporter looked up during the interview.

Austin Acosta also had a good game as he shared the leading scorer accolades with Trendon Martinez with nine.

“I was trying to get good looks and having to move the ball around to get our offense going,” Acosta said. “We can get pretty good when we get into better condition.”

A good game for Canyon Lake to see how far they need to go as this season progresses.

Now you can go work on those FREE Throws!

Logos Prep Lions Loose Teeth in Loss to BCS, 60-30

Sunday, November 18th, 2012

Bracken Christian Warriors took the bite out Logos Prep Lions last Saturday in Rockdale, 60-30.

Fullback Preston Koch

The last time BCS was trailing in a game was eight games ago against Boerne Geneva.

This Sugarland team had a lead twice as a result of that ‘Bonus Kick’, that has eluded this Warrior team all season long.

Bracken won when their defense figured out a different game plan defensively and that new scheme helped the Warriors get their separation, with five straight drives of holding Sugarland without a score.

“We just discovered our momentum and they weren’t able to come back from that,” Jeremy Fasenmyer said.

Meanwhile, BCS was scoring on their first nine drives of this game which helped in establishing a game plan that would allow Bracken to put their game in cruise control.

CL Flies Over Stacey Eagles, in 65-13 Win

Saturday, November 17th, 2012

Canyon Lake started out with a press that kept Stacey needing a dry cleaner in a win over the Eagles, 65-13 last Friday night at Hawk gym.

This game was over after the first quarter, as Stacey had a hard time getting on their offensive side of the court.

Katie Williams had more points than Stacey in her fourth quarter scoring, when she poured in 14 points from underneath the basket.

Depth is proving to be a key for this club as each player can bring some answers for any type of game that might be evolving.

It did not matter which quarter or which five players were on the court, since that depth was still more than this Eagle team could handle.

There are still many things to improve on with the Hawks.

A better free throw percentage comes to mind as this little part of this particular game was not something to worry about. In future games, this could be an undoing for a loss.

Bracken Christian Warriors will face Sugar Land Logos Prep Lions once again this year in their first round of playoffs. The game will be this Saturday in Rockdale, starting at 2:00pm.

In the first game, this BCS win was almost a full game. There was still more than four minutes remaining when the 45th point difference was scored in this game.

The Warriors doubled Logos Prep’s yardage and also doubled their first downs.

Some differences from the two games. Arnold Adame was lost for the season since that game and that loss has been huge hole for Bracken to continue trying to fill.

Hawks Boys Basketball Start Season with Loss to Cedar Creek

Wednesday, November 14th, 2012

Canyon Lake Boy’s Basketball tipped off their season last Tuesday night at Hawk gym against Stacey, in what proved to be a glorified scrimmage based on having one practice for many of these players.

“We played hard and we have had only one or two practices,” Head Coach Lucas Chapman said. “We haven’t had a lot of time to get our feet yet.”

Cedar Creek comes from a larger school setting, which gives those type of schools an upper hand against schools like Canyon Lake that has many players just now coming over from their football season.

The Hawks had a lead of 2-0, but that would be their last chance to be above water, as this Cedar Creek team had plenty of depth and continued to bring players from their bench that could exploit CL, which was just trying to find out who was playing where.

Coach Chapman also had 14 players that he was trying to find out what their skill set would be this early in the season.

CL Girls Basketball Get COMFORTable, Win 62-24

Wednesday, November 14th, 2012

Canyon Lake pounced on Comfort, 62-24 as the Hawks extended their record to 3-0, starting this year impressively.

There were several bright spots in this game. CL shot 82% from the field in the third quarter.

Their only two misses were three point attempts, while Canyon Lake controlled the boards. Amber Ramsey had eight points in this quarter.

The Hawks also had more steals than turnovers for this contest. Another 14 assists and a whopping 39 rebounds with 16 of those coming on the offensive side.

“We are more of a team and with this being my second year they are buying into the system,” Head Coach Mary Beth Gallagher said. “This year the team is more focused and with each game we are trying to get better.”

Canyon Lake had three players break double figures, Dulce Brown (10), Olivia Flores (11), and Ramsey (20).
