Hawks JV End Drought in Win over Blanco, 40-27

Canyon Lake’s Junior Varsity outscored Blanco, 24-4 in the second half to complete a comeback and put the finishing touches to the Panthers, 40-27.

In the first half, CL only had two players that scored while shooting 28 percent and twice had a 10 point deficit. The last time was 23-13 score with just over a minute left in the first half.

Blanco scored quickly to start the second half, but that was their last basket for this evening as the other two points scored by this Panther team was from their free throw line.

The drought that had hampered this Hawk team for the past few games seemed to still be lingering in starting this contest on this rainy and dreary evening.

The Hawks then woke up and scored 27 points while holding Blanco to four the last 16 minutes of this contest.

Trendon Martinez and Tommy Clark were the only players that scored in the first half combining for 16 points.

Austin Acosta and Skyler Tschoepe had 4 and 5 assists respectfully helping in giving players easy shots and confidence as this game progressed.

Tschoepe also pitched in with four blocks during a critical stretch when the comeback had commenced.

“Right spot at the right time,” Forward Tschoepe commented.

Canyon Lake was night and day when comparing both halves. Coach Hooper must of had an award winning half time dissertation.

“Coach got us amped up and told us to get in the game,” Tommy Clark said. “We were struggling with energy and intensity and our better defense in the second half got us back and everybody started helping.”

Energy was a common theme from many of the players in recounting how this game transpired into a victory.

“First half we had less energy and we weren’t looking for our offense,” Trendon Martinez pointed out. “We had to come out and compete in the second half and try to run them down and get them tired.”

Eleven assists will also tell you how well Canyon Lake was running their offense, during one stretch near the end of the second quarter, while the Hawks were starting their run, Tschoepe had three assists, one steal, and a block.

“Coach talked to us at halftime about missing players and to step it up and not let those things become excuses,” Tschoepe ended.

The ReSporter did not get an interview with Coach Hooper, since we learned what happened at halftime that inspired this turn-a-round from the players.

Next game will be in Gonzales this coming Monday as Canyon Lake looks to bring more rainfall into that part of the country as the drought seems to be a thing of the past.
