Coaches Corner with Soccer Coach Katie McWhorter
The ReSporter: You have been playing some teams that are two classes larger than CL. What are you wanting the girls to take from games like this as you prepare for District?
Coach McWhorter: “Our preseason schedule has no doubt been rigorous and jam-packed. As we prepare for district and play these games, I think that the team should get a better understanding of what we are going to be up against. Although our district has changed since last year, we are going to be up against some competitive teams who come from larger school districts. We need to get a feel of what teams like that are like in the preseason.”
The ReSporter: How many teams in district will qualify for the Playoffs?
Coach McWhorter: “The top four teams in our district will qualify for playoffs this year.”
The ReSporter: Give us your assessment of the schools in district and who will be the teams that will be on top?
Coach McWhorter: “Dripping Springs will no doubt be the hardest team we have to play in district- maybe even the hardest team we will play all season. Clemens is also a very skilled team. They have both won in some impressive games. Wimberley and Seguin seem to be similar in terms of skill and they have both done fairly well in preseason. We are definitely going to have to play our top game in order to compete with all of the teams we have in district.”
The ReSporter: How do you work with your team when other sports start up and you might have some players wanting to participate? In particular, Track Season.
Coach McWhorter: “Canyon Lake is a smaller school, and we do share a lot of athletes with other sports. Luckily that is a good thing, and all of the coaches here are very understanding and work together well. Right now I have a number of girls who are waking up early and going to track practice before school and still competing and practicing with soccer after school. It’s definitely a give and take, but as long as communication lines are open between coaches and student-athletes, it is something we encourage in order to grow our school’s athletic competitiveness.”
The ReSporter: Thanks Coach and good luck as you get ready for your District games!
