Hawks Lose Heartbreaker to Wimberley, 4-3

Left Fielder Cody Powell

Canyon Lake could not hold onto a two run lead in the seventh inning and end up giving a game to Wimberley in extra innings, 4-3.

The Hawks were progressing through the game with timely double plays and hitting while forging to what seemed to be a comfortable win.

Then two hit batters to start the seventh inning ended up scoring on the Texans only hit of that stanza and tying the game which eventually led to this heartbreaking loss.

Daniel Camarillo started the game with a double in the gap and scored the Hawks opening run when the Texans pitcher wild pitched him home on a bang…bang play at the plate.

Canyon Lake drew blood again in the third when Peyton Sipila singled with one out and advanced to second on catcher’s indifference.

Enter Cody Powell, who proceeded to have a seven pitch at bat and he finally found a pitch to handle scoring Sipila with a single.

That at bat by Powell had six of those seven pitches in the strike zone and speaks well for a great at bat. Powell ended this game with three hits.

The Hawks last score was ln the next inning when CL had two outs that were made on the base paths.

With Camarillo advancing to third with Travis Walker’s hard grounder in the hole, the ball hit Camarillo’s foot resulting in runner’s interference and an automatic out.

Walker’s hit would of scored Camarillo, but all CL had to show for this first out of the inning was two runners on and one out.

Nick Cahill who was pinch running for Michael Brady after receiving his third of four walks, scored on a hit off the bat of Tyler Vinson. Vinson was caught in a run down after advancing on the hit and finding second base already occupied.

That was the second of three outs that was after a hit. Those two outs certainly cost Canyon Lake one run and maybe more with what would of been two more chances of having batters coming to the plate.

The eighth inning had some good things happen, but one last error caused a run that ended this game.

Wimberley loaded the bases with no outs after an intentional walk giving the Hawks a force out at home plate.

With the infield in, Walker coaxed two pop ups and now having a chance of getting out of this inning and continuing this game.

Walker saw the first base Texan off the bag and threw what would of been an out to first, but his errant throw was not caught giving Wimberley a parting gift.

“I feel for them,” Head Coach Trent Dunavant said. “They (CL) played hard and we tried everything we could…that is just baseball.”

“We left too many runners on base,” Dunavant finished.

CL did leave 12 athletes on the base paths and that in itself was a final straw that caused this heartbreaking loss.

The Hawks next game will be in Boerne and hopefully Santa’s sleigh is empty after dispensing of all of their gifts to Wimberley.

Now CL can concentrate on opening some gifts in Boerne, they deserve it.
