JV Hawks have Walk in the Park in Wins over Wimberley, 9-5 and 7-6
Hawks had a walk in the park with two wins in Wimberley on a cold Monday night.
Canyon Lake outhit the Texans by 13, but walking nine players kept this game close as the Hawks completed a double header sweep after a 7-6 win in their first game.
“We won two tight ball games tonight,” Coach Brian Owens said. “It is those little things with the teams enthusiasm and communication on the field that win tight ball games.”
“Nick Kissell, coming in for Austin Headrick in that first game when the game was on the line and holding Wimberley that allowed us to comeback and William Volz doing the same thing in game two.”
Starting pitcher, Hayden Dubois had a no-hitter when Coach Owens went to the mound in the bottom of the fourth after allowing a couple of runs on walks.
Yes, it was a no hitter, but with seven walks Dubois certainly did not have command of the plate on this night.
“I went to get him because he was getting tired,” Coach Owens said. “He played hard in that first game and his legs were dead.”
On if he thought about letting Dubois continued pitching since he had a no hitter, “I did not even know he had a no hitter. But even if I did know, he (Dubois) would not complain because he is a team player.”
A side note, The ReSporter asked Dubois about his no hitter after the game and this player also did not know he was pitching a no no.
The good news is that CL still won this game after hanging six runs on Wimberley in the second inning which proved to be enough for their third straight victory over our friends from the north.
Gordon McCleary had a break out game in the batter’s box with two doubles and a single to lead Canyon Lake.
“I went in with a lot of confidence,” McCleary said clearly. “I did not play in the first game because I missed practice for my Birthday.”
“You just have to go out there and enjoy it and it just fells good to hit,” McCleary said doubly.
Austin Headrick had two hits with a triple in his final at bat getting an rbi and later scoring on a McCleary’s second double.
William Volz pitched a good game in relief as he gave up one hit with a ball that went all of 15 feet down the third base line helping that Texan to leg out an infield hit.
A key play of this game came on a play that had Catcher Zach Gregory trying to find a ball at the plate while a Texan was running from first to third.
When Gregory finally found the ball he looked like a seven year old at an Easter Egg Hunt as his eyes latched onto this egg that proved to be a regular baseball when their was no coloring to what was thought an egg.
Gregory then zipped the egg to third and it broke all over the baserunner in a run down giving the Hawks an important second out in what was a one run game.
“I couldn’t find the ball,” Gregory started. “I was trying to block it (ball) some weird way.”
The ReSporter wanted to know if this was a trick while trying to draw the baserunner to advance an extra base? “No Sir,” Gregory said with resolve. “Not at all.”
Regardless the play looked like Gregory had laid an egg and that end result was a 1-2-3 inning and giving Canyon Lake a chance to protect their precious one run lead.
Gregory said it best, “There is nothing better than beating Wimberley, especially in baseball.”
Yes, this was a Walk in the Park, but next time Canyon Lake can hopefully concentrate on maybe riding a stationary bike and saving some hair for fans in the stands.
