Hawks JV Baseball Split Games with Navarro

Canyon Lake JV baseball team split their games with Navarro Panthers last Monday night at the

JV Coach Brian Owens with Post Game Talk

Hawk Diamond. Winning the first game 7-4 and coming out on the short end 13-8 in the nightcap.

The Hawks dug themselves in a hole in both games, but the second game their hole was much deeper than a Hawk could climb (or fly) out of.

“We started both games the same in making the same mistakes over and over,” Head JV Coach Brian Owens said. “I challenged them on communicating, but for the most part I was pleased with our pitchers.”

Canyon Lake did have some good pitching in that first game as Nick Kissell had a decent outing with Gordon McCleary closing out this contest.

The Hawks did have a little bit of fireworks as Austin Headrick hit a two run home run in the bottom of that fourth inning giving Canyon Lake their lead back after allowing the tying runs in the top of that same inning.

“I was using a brand new bat and I was trying to break it in,” Headrick said.

This might mean a lot more breaking in of new bats if this could be the result for Headrick. “That was my first home run, but I don’t remember much about it since I was hit on my head about about 1500 times.”

That had to be exciting as a Headrick got hit on the Head enough times that you can just call him Rick.

A couple of triples, one in each game, by Kissell and McCleary showed some pop as both runners would not be classified as ‘speed’ burners.

“Once I rounded second, I saw Coach and I knew that I had hit it (the ball) pretty good, so I just kicked it in,” Kissell said matter of factly.

On commenting on what happened in the second contest, Kissell gave his assessment, “We have to be looking to play with more energy and enthusiasm.”

McCleary had a triple in that first game that had players on the base paths clearing the way for this load of a young man barreling around the diamond for third base.

McCleary had a similar hit in the second game when the ball looked like it grazed the first base bag.

McCleary took off again and did not stop until he reached second base.

“I just kept running until coaches told me to stop,” McCleary said proudly.

On pitching to a team that seemed to bunt no matter the game situation, McCleary stated, “I had to go outside with my pitches and try to make them stride outside to get their bat on the ball.”

“We also have to get loud, like we did in this game at the end so we can end our season well,” McClosed.

Canyon Lake will be hosting three teams from District 27-3A in a round robin on Thursday that will place each team for a one game playoff for placement in the District race.

The team that wins both games will be paired with one of the three teams playing in Boerne that also won two games for the District Championship on Saturday in Boerne.

A one loss team will play a one loss and so on till all the teams are placed for District 27-3A standings.

CL will play 10am and 2pm on Thursday and based on how many losses, will play their one game playoff on Saturday.

No wins=10am; 1 win=12 Noon; 2 wins=2pm in Boerne.
