CL Freshman Showing improvement in Loss to Burnet, 27-8

Canyon Lake Freshman still making strides while improving with each contest as Burnet came from behind to beat the Hawks, 27-8 last Thursday night at Hawk Stadium.

The Hawks scored their first touchdown of this season after Keith Hutson intercepted a pass on Burnet’s first drive of the game.

That interception and 20 yard return from Hutson set up Canyon Lake on Burnet’s 35 yard line.

Then Tyler Shipman took a hand off on the left side of the line for 32 yards and a first down on the 3 yard line. One play later Shipman got the call again for that first taste of scoring this year.

The two point conversion on a pass play from Brandon Courtney to Heath McDonough would give the Hawks a lead until a rash of fumbles gave Canyon Lake whiplash and a before you know it 13 point deficit.

What is wrong with this picture? Which game situation does not fit?

1. First lead of the year on a first quarter touchdown.
2. Running 46 plays to Burnet’s 29.
3. Having more total yards in game by 35 yards.
4. Outrushing your opponent 176 to 38 margin.
5. Seven fumbles and losing three.

Those seven fumbles stopped momentum for drives as well as resulting in 13 points which certainly would give CL a better outlook as this game proceeded to the latter stages.

“We moved the ball better, but those turnovers killed us,” Head Freshman Coach John Barthels stated. “Everybody was at practice this week and we practiced hard.”

Then Coach Barthels commented on his defensive side of the ball, “They were coming off the ball better and gang tackling….this team is working hard getting to the ball and they are getting a nose for the ball quicker.”

Canyon Lake Freshman team might not show their improvement with their record, but seeing how this team is progressing has to give you a sense of accomplishment as this season goes into the middle part of the year.

Guard Allen Vavrecka was instrumental in opening up holes in the offensive line and helping the running backs with more success.

“Working together and getting our blocks along with getting off quicker has also helped us in maintaining our blocks longer,” Vavrecka assessed. “We have to stay pumped, everything is going great and if we maintain our blocks and get off the ball faster then we can be better.”

Next week, Canyon Lake Freshman will head off for La Grange and we will wait to see how the improvement continues to this season.

Hopefully we can get #5 on the question above taken off that list and adding winning the game being the result.
