CL Hawk Freshman are Growing Up in Loss to La Vernia, 8-0

That same improvement was also seen between the first and second half as CL had a different resolve when they took the field starting the third quarter.
“When we look back at the Hays game and how many freshman they had playing, I told the players that it does not matter how many the other team has, they can only play with 11 players the same as we have,” Head Freshman Coach John Barthels said. “We hit the hole quicker in the second half and that was one of our adjustments we made at halftime.”
The Hawks had the ball only once when they held The Bears with 2:10 left in the third quarter and then lost the ball on downs with 2:45 left in the fourth quarter.
A 46 yard drive with four first downs was a great positive drive that with one play that doomed your Hawks and a possible comeback thwarted.
Running back Hayden Reed was a big part of a much more efficient offense during that drive.
“We were blocking the whole game, I just hit the hole a lot faster,” Reed said. “Last week we focused on offense and this week we practiced on wrapping up on defense.”
Reed was commenting on how well this defense played to help keep the game close enough to give the Hawk offense a chance.
If Heath McDonough would of had a better Doctor, then CL might have had a better chance of scoring as McDonough was short four yards on an interception on the Bears two point try.
McDonough was also just short on two passes that could of also changed the game.
“I had been ill this week,” McDonough coughed. “I read the tackle and went to the second receiver and the ball was just there…I thought I had beat their man but I just came up short in making the goal line.”
“I thought we just blocked better in the fourth quarter and our defense is wrapping up and making tackles,” McDonough assessed as The ReSporter was getting more distance in this interview after learning McDonough had strep throat this week.
Another player that helped on both sides of the ball was defensive back Austin Brennan, “We really picked up or fireyness when we came across the field.”
Canyon Lake had the ball for 8:25 on their one drive in the second half and 6:32 for five drives in that first half. That gives you an idea of how a team can grow up even in a loss.
On what needs to be done as this team prepares for next week’s contest, Brennan said, “We need to hang our heads high and don’t get low and try to perform better as a team.”
This team has been outmanned by their opponents this season as La Vernia had three times the number of players, but this score certainly was a step in the right direction as these Hawks bear down on as this season continues.
