JV Hawks Can’t Hold Lead to Bulldogs, Lose 16-14

It was a game that a fourth quarter comeback led to a victory…the only difference on this Thursday

night for the Canyon Lake JV team was being on the wrong end of that score, losing 16-14 to Somerset.

Last week, the Hawks responded with 19 points in a 4th quarter blitz over Blanco giving a nice ride home with three point win.

This time it was Somerset winning a game in that same stanza by scoring 14 unanswered points in a game your Hawks let fly away.

That flight was an 81 yard pass play with just one minute left on the clock that spelled Canyon Lake.

“We started great,” JV Coach Brian Owens stated. “This is something every JV team has to experience and they will need to learn from this lesson.”

“They (Hawks) did everything we asked and we just have to have toughness and intensity that will last till the end of the game…we hit a plateau during the middle of the game and we never regained our momentum.”

The Tale of the Tape

First Three Quarters Yardage Yards per Play Turnovers Points
Canyon Lake 193 5.5 1 Fumble 14
Somerset 111 3.8 1 Fumble 0
Fourth Quarter Yardage Yards per Play Turnovers Points
Canyon Lake 58 4.7 1 Int 0
Somerset 134 14.9 0 16

CL had 10 more plays than this Bulldog team and everything you want from an offense that primary function is to run had everything in control.

“We were confused when they (Somerset) started the game with a five and four man front,” Offensive Lineman Anthony Wagner said. “They were even blitzing their linebackers and in the second quarter we changed…but in the beginning we did very well.”

Wagner also echoed what Coach Owens had stated, “We started losing our focus and our excitement…we just have to stay pumped up the whole game.”

The Hawks even had an interception on the 9 yard line act like a 20 yard punt for the good guys.

Offensively and Defensively, the Hawks had controlled this game from their very first drive of 62 yards on 11 plays.

Canyon Lake looked much sharper on offense as the running tandem of Alex Martinez (81 yards) and Matt Adams (140 yards) combined for 221 yards.

Tim Romero was also nails with his blocking opening up several long runs for Adams and a great 32 yard run for a score that also offset a holding call one play earlier that put the Hawks in a hole.

“Everything we ran to their right, they weren’t ready for it,” Adams said. “If (Tim) Romero would of not blocked their corner, then i would might have only gained five yards instead of getting that touchdown.”

On what needs to happen going into their next game, Adams also had some advice, “Last week we had the fourth quarter and this week we let it go. We have to finish next week.”

This Bulldog team had a lot of size and players like Jakob Merritt, Haden Lee, and Grant Offtermatt along with other Hawks took care of business in getting a lead.

Defensive Back, Merritt also chimed in, “That first half we dominated both sides of the ball…we got everything we wanted to do, but next week we have to fight in both halts and finish the fourth quarter.”

One Hawk drive in the 3rd quarter resulted in 30 yards and allowing Somerset to take the ball on downs. However that same drive also had 10 plays and 6:38 of time elapse on the clock, which was vintage Slot-T magic.

So, it can be said that with this loss, Canyon Lake might have had more positives than the win a week earlier in Blanco.
