CL Hawks Sweep Bandera for First District Win
CL Hawks win first District 27-3A contest over Bandera last Tuesday night at Mountain Valley Middle School, 25-12, 25-17, 21-25, and 25-18.
This was a must win as CL had already had one loss to Navarro to start the season and a loss to Bandera would put the Hawks in a deep hole.
This district presently has four teams that rank in the Top 25 according to Texas Girls Coaches Association.
The Bulldogs from Bandera and Canyon Lake are the only two teams in district that have not made that lofty position which tells you the importance of this contest.
This year, four teams do make the playoffs, so Canyon Lake will need to be on each night as this will be a season of many pot holes to avoid.
The Hawks not only won their Varsity game, but also swept Bandera in games against the Freshman and Junior Varsity teams.
Both of those squads are undefeated in District 27-3A as they started their season with wins over Navarro.

Freshman Hawks Give Bandera ‘Barf Bag’ After Roller-Coaster Ride Win
The ReSporter will start with Canyon Lake Freshman game which turned out to be a roller coaster ride at The State Fair.

“It was a little stressful for my heart,” Freshman Head Coach Tasha Ridgeway said timidly.
The Hawks won the first game, 25-16 when these Bullpups caught CL in the second contest and finished the game with a 22-25 win.
That set up the roller coaster ride for that third contest.
Canyon Lake was also having to change some players for positions they had not played yet this season. That showed on the court in that second game and parts of the third contest as communication was not as crisp and a lot of unforced errors allowed Bandera to stay close.
“We are missing three players and we had to move some players around to positions that they had not played,” Coach Ridgeway continued. “But we had a good focus for this game tonight because this district is very good.”
Bandera started that last game with a 7 point barraged that was countered by CL with a 5 point rally of their own.
“We always work together and it helps with our teamwork in how we encourage each other,” Katherine Weber stated as she was one of those player in a new spot for this game. “Because this was a district game it was encouraging to have players like Landry Hollums helping us to know what to do and how to do it.”
With another avalanche of points, Canyon Lake found themselves up 15-10 but that roller coaster ride was not over as Bandera returned the favor by going ahead 20-17.
Communication was needed and this Freshman team responded with an 8-3 score to finish off Bandera and give them their 2-0 start in district play.
On how the team was responding to all of the upheavals for this contest, Mia Riali said with resolve, “We had to be encouraging with each other during those runs and we had to be sure we talked and communicated.”
“I had to know where to go and hit,” Riali said is response to playing a different position in this game. “I had to be on the back row for serves and I had to just do it.”
Good game and more to come as this team just Did It against Bandera.

Junior Varsity was also a recipient of a Mister Hyde and Doctor Jekyll contest as this team was a no show to start their night losing the first game, 14-25 to Bandera.
Jessica Moore helps lead Canyon Lake back for a win over Bandera JV
Notice, this Strange Case was changed since Canyon Lake had actually started this contest out of control, hence the title.
“They weren’t mentally prepared starting this game,” Head Junior Varsity Coach Leigh Ann Weaver said. “We lost to Bandera at the Wimberley tournament and we knew it would be a tough match but we were not ready for this level of play in that first game.”
The Hawks won in three games, 14-25, 25-16, and 15-6 to also catapult this team to a 2-0 District 27-3A record after winning their game over Navarro last Friday night.
In that first game Bandera jumped out to a 5-0 lead and were never threatened for the rest of this contest.
CL did get within one point, 10-11 after a Addison Farley block.
That would be as close as the Hawks would get as Bandera’s JV would score 8 points to end the game.
Doctor Jekyll would arrive for the next two games and their route of Bandera.
“We came together as a team when we got our level of confidence up,” Coach Weaver closed.
CL opened the second game much like Bandera started in game one with four points, but another run from the Bulldogs had this game nip and tuck with the game knotted up at 15 all.
Sam York and Sydney Riebschlager then closed out this game while scoring a 10 to 1 score on their serves and kills.
York with one and Riebschlager two aces was also helped when Jessica Moore scored three kills on those last rally points.
Canyon Lake jumped out to a 7-2 lead in the third game as they carried these dogs outside in winning the match.
Moore was the server on those last five points as CL finished off Bandera, 15-6.
“We wound up really wanting this game,” Moore started. “We were not together as a team to start this game and we talked it out….we are getting better on the court and we are going to work on not having to go three games next time.”

Canyon Lake Varsity extended their home games winning streak to six games in their win over Bandera in four games, 25-12, 25-17, 21-25, and 25-18.

The Hawks took control of this match and did not let Bandera even taste a lead until a 16-17 score for the third game of this match.
“I’ll take the blame for that,” Head Coach Kim Paisley said. “We had great first two games and then I tried to get everyone in the game and we lost our momentum, but we still executed….I’ll take the blame for the third game.”
Canyon Lake 10 service errors in those four games as in each game the Hawks reduced those errors which will always give Coach Paisley some small victories as she always stresses that she wants her teams to have consistency.
Those 10 service errors will result in some extra running for the players, “Yes, we will be doing some running tomorrow,” Mariah Ellis said matter of fact.
On what this win means for this program, “I think this win will give us confidence and will pull up our level of play and help us to play better,” Ellis continued. “I do feel more confident and I want to be more consistent.”
That will be like music to Coach Paisley ears.
There were a lot of players that certainly had good games tonight and Senior Trena Lorett certainly lost some skin on the floor on this night.
“This year we have strengthened as a team and this can be our year to keep stepping it up as we try to make the playoffs,” Lorett said. “I knew if we won this game, then it would show how our game has improved and we came to play tonight.”
Canyon Lake had lost earlier this season in the Wimberley tournament to Bandera and the difference between those two teams was night and day different from earlier in the season.
The Hawks passes were crisp and CL certainly had this Bulldog team is disarray as they tried to find a combination that could offset the points being scored at will against them.
Bandera only had one server score a point on a serve in that first game and most of their points were a result of CL’s five service errors.
Canyon Lake has seven different players with a kill and six players that had a point on serve with an ace.
This was a game with many of the players pitching in and getting it done.
Now the Hawks will host Boerne at Mountain Valley Middle School as they continue their trek for positioning for a playoff spot.
