CL Hawks Walk away with 27-6 Win over Bandera

Hawks take Bulldogs for a walk as this year’s version of CL football won their first game with what you could call a complete game victory in Bandera, 27-6.
“We beat them up physically and that was our plan,” Head Coach Charley Drum started. “It is easy to give up when you are 0-6 overall and 0-1 in district, we have learned from what we have done this season…we knew that we would have to come out strong and we played a solid first quarter and we had some big plays.”
Complete Win for the Hawks.
First off, Canyon Lake’s new offense chewed up yardage on the ground with 367 yards at a 7 yard per carry clip.
Second off, Canyon Lake’s defense held Bandera to the lowest yardage total in Hawk history as these Bulldogs never got out of their back yard with just 109 yards of offense.

point (keeping a one point lead) and had one punt that was a beauty going 59 yards.
Fourth off, Canyon Lake still needs to work on those penalties. Yes, Coaches are always wanting to work on something in a game.
Bandera totaled 109 yards and the Hawks helped them with another 106 yards of penalties.
Gives you a good idea of the dominance in this contest when penalty yards can match total yards for a team.
Canyon Lake’s first two drives had tons of plays and yardage.

On that third CL drive in the second quarter, the Hawks were nursing a one point lead when they started on their 42 yard line after a Bandera touchdown.
After driving to Bandera’s 35 yard line a chop block penalty had your Hawks looking at a first down and needing 25 yards.
A run for 8 yards for McGuire Johnson gave CL a second and 17 yards for a first. Then an incomplete pass had a vicarious 17 yards needed for keeping this drive going.
The Hawks then completed a pass by Skyler Tschoepe to Josh DeVries for 21 yards and a first.

“We only completed one pass play for the game and that one pass was the play of the game,” Offensive Coordinator Troy Moses said eloquently. “That play was put in this week.”
“We controlled the line of scrimmage and those long running plays stem from the other plays that we run,” Moses parted in response on the explosive running plays Canyon Lake had in this contest.
How about 13 plays of 10 or more yards in this contest. That will have your Bulldog sleeping on your lap.
“We were so hungry for a win and we pulled together,” Running Back McGuire Johnson said. “We had to change our mind set and this game was our new start and you saw our new energy.”
Bandera did have a chance of doing more damage after a kick-off return to the Hawk 11 yard line as CL was holding onto their 14-6 lead with 2:30 time on the clock.
A score here would of negated the touchdown Canyon Lake had enjoyed forging that 8 point lead.
Two rushing plays for two yards and a third down blitz that had the Bulldogs losing seven yards and involved Bandera going for a touchdown on a fourth down from Canyon Lake’s 14 yard line.
Javier Mendez squelched the next play with an interception in the end zone as Mendez gave the Bulldog receiver no chance of being successful.

“We talked before the game that we had not played with passion and attitude,” Coach Drum said. “We did tonight.”
The half ended with a CL 14-6 lead but that eight point lead was misleading as the Hawks were enjoying 212 yards to Bandera’s 93 total.
During that second half the defense opened up a can of stink on these Dogs as they kept Bandera’s offense to only 19 yards and 15 of those yards came on the Bulldogs last play on a fourth and needing 23 yards.
Christian Dittman was seen in the Bulldogs backyard so many times you could spot his jersey in Bandera’s huddle.
“Hard week of practice pays off,” Dittman jumped. “I was faster than their blockers which allowed me to get to their quarterback.”
Dittman was credited with two sacks for -17 yards, and one play where he was throwing a Dog down for another loss as Bandera’s QB Joe Rodriguez threw that ball to the grass in order to avoid being sacked.
QB Rodriguez was seen with a ‘Bounty’ representative after the game to get those green grass stains off his jersey.
Canyon Lake ended the game how they started, by dominating the line and keeping Bandera’s offense on the sideline.
On Bandera’s last drive, CL was playing, ‘don’t give up a first down on that last play defense’, which played right into Canyon Lakes game as these Hawks ended the game driving to Bandera’s 26 yard line with time running out to end the game.

Only three times with the ball for Bandera which had a longer walk to their dressing room after the game than yardage made in the game.
Canyon Lake now finds themselves in the thick of a District 27-3A race.

Canyon Lake holds their destiny on their own hands if they can take care of business the next three weeks.
