CLJV Run Roughshod over Bandera in Winning, 30-0
Canyon Lake JV took Bandera to the wood shed in their win at Hawk stadium on Thursday night, 30-0.
“The journey this year from that great comeback win in Blanco to not finishing games where we played 3 quarters here or there, but never a whole game,” Head Junior Varsity Coach Brian Owens stated. “We had to learn how to finish and we did not give up when this season got tough….we are playing with more enthusiasm.’
The Hawks held Bandera to no yards on their first drive which allowed the offense to set up shop and take a quick 8-0 lead. This drive was for 43 yards on 6 carries and a score that would be all CL would need for a win.
A key for this win was a line that dominated the trenches and running backs that shared the ball in running up the score and yardage.
At one point during this game, Justus Montgomery, Cody Davis, and Cody Murray each had 63-68 yards rushing each. That type of game plan kept the Bulldogs guessing on who would be running next.
“We just grind and run our stuff,” Coach Owens said. “We only ran four or five plays all night and we just got after them.”
Defensively, Canyon Lake held Bandera to 68 total yards and even topped that during the second half when the Bulldogs had 49 yards and 28 if those yards was when the game clock was rushing towards the end of the game.
CLJV seemed to have a new confidence in this contest as holes were larger and the backs had an extra step in their get-a-long.
Canyon Lake averaged 6.5 yards per play which translate the dominance from that offensive line.
“The lineman were the winners tonight,” Coach Owens closed.
The ReSporter only talked to that offensive line as some kudos needed to be bestowed on this group of young man.
“We have a lot coming around now,” Offensive lineman Chris Schultz bellowed. “The Coaches have been getting on us to get to those gaps we need to do…we (lineman) watch each others back and this is a team game and we can’t win by ourselves.”
Another lineman, Cameron Susuki has an added assignment by being the center quipped, “Overall we are doing better in practice and we have to prove ourselves when we practice against the varsity and if we can block them (varsity) then that will make these games easier for us.”
On what added jobs a center has to contend with, Susuki said, “I have to make sure I can get the snap off and sometimes I have two guys lined up right across from me…when that happens I just try to squeeze myself through those players to get my block.”
Finally, Anthony Wagner also was instrumental in helping Canyon Lake to dominate Bandera’s defense.
“Our practices are more intense lately,” Wagner blocked. “These past couple of weeks we have been giving it our all.”
Wagner also commented on how he completes his blocks on running plays, “We use our running backs to help guide us to who we need to block and that will help on our rushing.”
Canyon Lake did look crisper in this contest and now will prepare for Wimberley next Thursday.
