Hawk Exorcise Texans in 28-13 Win
Back in 2008, Canyon Lake started their first year of varsity football and during that campaign the Hawks lost 9 games as CL was overmatched against their Senior laden opponents.
Since that inaugural year, Canyon Lake has returned the favor in winning all but one game….Wimberley.

Canyon Lake beat Ingram both years in district and Brandeis was the other loss and since that school is a couple of classifications above Canyon Lake, then a payback game for them will not be on any radar.
However, Wimberley has been on the radar and with only 14 miles separating these two communities makes those radar shots even more revealing.
“I can scratch Wimberley off my 0-9 list,” Head Coach Charlie Drum said. “The kids did it and that is the what this offense is suppose to do in games like this.”
Canyon Lake’s offense was on their game, but that defense was nails in the first half.
Here are Wimberley’s First Half Drives:

The Texans did not pass the midfield stripe and had just two first downs in that half.
Contrast those numbers with CL’s 255 yards and the biggest surprise would be how close Wimberley was in this game at halftime.
A stalled drive on the one yard line would have put this game away earlier than anyone in the stands would have thought.
Explosive plays would be common as this game matured. The Hawks had 12 plays of 10 yards or more in this contest.
Case in point would be McGuire Johnson who was stymied early in this game with 5 carries for 6 yards. Then the Dam was opened up and Johnson had 127 yards by his tenth carry.
First 5 carries = 5 yards
Next 5 carries = 122 yards
That would translate into a decent average as Johnson would finish this game with 182 yards.
“They (Wimberley) were keying on our guards and they did a great job,” Offensive Coordinator Troy Moses said. “This is not the first time they have faced an offense like we have…this was their third game so we had to add some different plays that they had not seen and that confused them some.”
“We have been pretty basic after the Burnet game when we tried to add some packages to our offense,” Moses said. “But we did a good job in ending this game and we have opened the game up.”
Canyon Lake started their first scoring drive on their 42 yard line and proceeded 58 yards on 7 plays which also had the Hawks overcoming 20 yards of penalties.
A key wheel route for Josh DeVries resulted in a pass and run for 28 yards which had the Hawks on the score board and holding their largest lead ever for a Hawk team 6-0 against the Texans.
Last season your Hawks had a 3-0 lead before Wimberley unloaded for 40 unanswered points.
The Hawks would score on their next possession when they covered 64 yards and scored on a DeVries’s run this time from the 13 yard line and a 14 point lead.
Johnson also bulldozed for 50 yards on two carries helping set up DeVries’s run.
Canyon Lake would keep the pressure on the Texans as the Hawks would score again with a 52 yard drive.
The key play on this drive was QB Skyler Tschoepe dribbling the ball for an 11 yard play giving CL a first down and a score two plays later on their first play of the final quarter.
Wimberley was finally rustled up from their slumber as they would score on their next two possessions and the Texan defense also stopped the Hawks on a fourth and one yard needed play.
“I tried to end the game on that 4th down try,” Coach Drum stated. “I would be a genius if we would have been successful and the kids wanted to try for it.”
Momentum was getting a lot of steam for the visitors after a two play drive traveling 34 yards and a new game, 21-13 after that negated fourth down try.
Canyon Lake then performed The Drive.
Taking over on their 35 yard line the Hawks would take six minutes off the clock and score. That drive was vintage 2013 Hawks.
A 13 play drive that converted three 3rd downs, with the final run coming from DeVries when he walked it in for his third touchdown for this historic Hawk night.
Canyon Lake’s défense finished this game the way they started it, with an interception, this time from Linebacker Jared Bruckman.
Three plays for -1 yards with an interception and giving the Hawks their best offensive set-up in their history with Wimberley…..a Victory Formation.
A total game had been the Hawks problem all season and this was now the second game in a row where all three aspects were on.
Offense: Dominated with 395 yards. Defense: Dominated with 150 yards. Special Teams: Dominated with great field position after each kick-off.
CL’s defensive backfield had seven batted passes in this outing and probably put together one of their best efforts this year.

Safety Tommy Clark: “We knew what they were going to do and our practices have been great the last two weeks….We had a great game plan and we were well prepared.”
Safety Shane Relkin: “We were just working as a team and we had good practice this week and great communication….we have a bond.”
DefensiveTackle Cody Simmons: “Really they just told us that we were heartless and we just had a new beginning and we just made Canyon Lake history.”
Linebacker Dominic Theisz: “I’m cheering on the offense when I’m on the sideline, but I’m also thinking about what I can do better when I go back out there and I’m also helping the younger players so we can all be on the same page.”
“It started while we were losing,” Theisz said while responding to what has transpired these past two weeks. “It finally clicked and we have been hyped on defense….this win means a lot, especially with this being my Senior year and now have that feeling that we beat Wimberley…this is an awesome experience.”
Running Back Hayden DuBois: “Hard work in practice and beating Wimberley is a big game for us. Practice does not make you perfect—Perfect practice makes you perfect, now this win gets us ready for the next one.”
Guard Drake Phillips: “I think it was a great win and it will be something I will remember, but our main goal right now is making the playoffs.”
Quarterback Skyler Tschoepe: “I would say that this victory is a confidence builder and this will propel us to greater heights, we were just missing something this whole season and I think we have that confidence and knowing we can win.”
On his dribble run for a first down: “That dribble run not only caught them off guard, but it caught us off guard too.”
Tight End Connor Ricker: “I thought the whole team was amazing, I thought it was scary after they (Texans) scored their second touchdown….but I also knew that our defense would not let them score again.”
Cornerback Javier Mendez: “We played as a team and we are encouraging each other and becoming one unit and that is how you get it done….tonight and the last two games it has been a group effort and as a whole unit.
Now if only Canyon Lake could figure our where to have that Parade.

Wow…trying to figure out a Parade would be like Wimberley trying to figure out who has the ball on that Slot-T offense…literally impossible.
