Mountain Valley 8th Grade Sweep Boerne

The carnage started after the opening kick-off as the Mountain Valley 8th Grade A team put a whuppin on the Boerne Greyhounds at Hawk stadium.

A 63 yard 3 play drive to start the game had this Hawk team out of the gate and leaving behind a Greyhound team that looked more like a Brownhound.

Two runs gaining 18 yards from Micah St. John and then a burst right through the middle of an offensive line that controlled Boerne by Ben Fulton and Mountain Valley was putting these Greyhounds on a Bus before they had a chance to enter their race.

“I don’t think I would of had those yards if it wasn’t for my offensive line and (Luke) Justis blocking for me,” Running Back Fulton said.

Defense was also very apparent for MV when they held Boerne to a lofty (-11) yards of total offense in that first half.

   3 -10 25 Yard Punt 5 plays 10 yards Half

Dominance would be another adjective to describe this race to the finish line.

“Our defense played tough and did a great job of stopping Boerne’s running game,” Coach Brandon Pawelek said.

The Hawks had 201 yards of offense in that first half and pretty much did what they wanted to

do as a team in controlling this Boerne team.

“I’m proud of our team for coming out and playing hard and improving to 4-0,” Coach Pawelek said. “We are seeing improvement in our offense every week and our offensive line is a big part of that.”

Fulton was making himself known by averaging over 14 yards per carry on his way to the century mark on just seven carries.

MV also unleashed eight different runners in this contest outnumbering this Greyhound on the race track.

In fact, five of those Hawk running backs had more rushing yards than Boerne’s rushing offense.

The only defense that Boerne had that could stop this onslaught was that first half buzzer as Mountain Valley scored on every position when they got their hands on the ball.

Quarterback Joyner had 78 yards running, but it was his two broken plays that were turned into positive yardage that looked impressive.

One was on a pass play that saw Joyner directing traffic as he ran for his life and then finding Caimen McDonough for an 18 yard pass play and first down deep in Boerne’s territory.

“I just had a feeling,” QB Joyner said when commenting on his touchdown run and how he rescued broken plays. “Then I just went into my second gear.”

A St. John one yard run was the final dagger for this drive that typified this game of supremacy.

Other words for ‘dominance’: Ascendancy, governance, power, authority, control.

Boerne’s earned their first, first down in the 4th quarter, when both teams decided to open it up.

It took the Greyhounds two 4 play drives to bring some solace for their side of the field as the Hawk announcer was announcing another game being played in Boerne and a 34-8 score by the 7th Grade A team.

“This means nothing,” Joyner closed after commenting on this win and season. “We haven’t played anyone yet and we want to be undefeated.”

“Beat Navarro and Wimberley,” Fulton also commented. “None of these others count. We want those two teams.”

This ReSporter will need more advertisers so this publication can stay in business long enough to cover these two grades though their Senior season as both 7th and 8th Grade A teams are undefeated this season with 4-0 records.

Mountain Valley Hawks B squad hold Block Party in Win over Boerne, 8-6.

The Hawk’s Eric Hill blocked a Boerne punt with 1:26 left in the game and Andrew Nelson

scooped the ball and barreled into the end zone for the winning touchdown in this hard fought contest.

Mountain Valley had put the Greyhounds deep into their side of the field after driving what could of been a winning drive before a fumble stopped their chance.

There were only one opportunity for the Hawks in that second half to make any noise. Boerne had three drives after that Hawk blocked punt.

Mountain Valley might not have had to rely on that blocked punt for this win as Running Back Edward Carnales raced for a 77 yard run that was called back by a penalty. The Hawks finished the drive on their field with no time left on a first half clock.

“I was thinking, why did we get a penalty,” Carnales said after the game.

Carnales was still a major part of this offense as his ability to get wide, left Boerne grasping for air on many of those carries.

“I just figured that I had to get outside,” Carnales continued. “They had a hard time getting an angle on me.”

All the other penalties on MV were of the 5 yard variety and this would be the one penalty called for 10 yards.

Two turnovers would be a big downer for a team that averaged only 3.3 yards per running attempt.

Mountain Valley only had four times with an offensive possession and that was what made a blocked punt so poignant in this victory over the Greyhounds.

With a little math, that Carnales 77 yard gallop would of advanced that per run average up to 5.7 yards per carry for this game.

Defense was a main instrument for winning this game as MV proved when they stopped Boerne on their drive after that unfortunate fumble on the Hawks only drive for the second half.

A linebacker blitz to start Boerne’s drive put the Greyhounds in a punting situation giving MV  one more chance and a blocked punt was the result.

The play looked like Mountain Valley had every player and the trainers coming in on the punter and 16 yards later a touchdown that was not finished until Reno Parker ran in that 2 point extra point to give your Hawks a hard fought win.

“I just ran as fast as I could to get to the end zone,” Nelson said. “Eric Hill got his hand on the ball and I just picked it up and started running.”

“They really did not expect us and we got everyone going and we got to them,” Nelson finished. “That was my first touchdown.”

Block Parties are great for Mountain Valley now and next time they look to invite Fredericksburg to their party.
