Canyon Lake will have their work cut out for them this week as Pleasanton will be doing their best to not live up to their name.
There are some common opponents to compare and both of those games would reside in favor of the Eagles.
La Vernia beat both teams, but the Eagles loss was just six points while Canyon Lake was on the short end by 20 points.
Somerset is a more striking difference as Pleasanton was able to keep their opponent to just 15 points while Canyon Lake’s defense was in the dog house for much of this game surrendering 47 points.
On top of those two games, Pleasanton has only that one defeat to La Vernia and has handled all comers this season with that 9-1 record.
The Eagles will be bringing another dual threat quarterback to this game and that many times will translate into a tough defensive game.
Jacob Arevalo has thrown for 1191 yards and rushed for 1134 real estate. Last year, Arevalo ran for over 1000 yards as their running back and now is complimenting that talent and showing off his passing game.
Not only that, but the Eagles have another back that has amassed 882 yard with Grant Jackson and Luke Stewart with 384 yards and a nifty 8.5 yards per carry.
The receiving corps has three players with 11 or more catches.
Josh Oliver has 18 catches for 353 yards while Josh Jackson and Jason Mills are almost dead even with 162 and 155 yards respectfully.
Grant Jackson has also come out of the backfield catching 7 balls for 175 yards or a 25 yard average.
Defensively, Pleasanton has Linebacker Chris Vasquez who led the Eagles in tackles last season and Defensive End Colton Knapp who had five sacks last year will be joined by many other players.
The offensive and defensive lines are strengths for Pleasanton Eagles.
Need something to indicate that Canyon Lake still has a chance?
Pleasanton’s schedule has teams with a 14-37 record as of last week while the Hawks opponents are 25 games over .500 record.
You can’t get too high on that stat since the two teams that are common still would favor Pleasanton.
The Hawks might still be reeling after the bath they took last week in Navarro. Not a good way to end the regular season.
Being shut out and not being able to stop the Panthers offense combined for CL’s worst loss since playing Blanco (63-0) in 2008. That was the Hawks first game ever and playing with no seniors during that year.
Can Canyon Lake bounce back? The season seemed to be gathering steam going into that Panther Den.
What happens now? The Hawks will need to get their Slot-T back in gear and defensively CL has to buckle down against a team that is averaging 39 points per game and had a night off last week while Canyon Lake was being pounded by Navarro.
Pleasanton has averaged a 22-9 lead at halftime against their combatants and seem to have fast starts. This team only passes 12 times per game and relies heavily on the run.
Canyon Lake will need to stop the run and hope that the Eagles don’t break out a Slot-T as an offensive set during this game.
