Hawks have a Microcosm Moment in Win over Boerne, 37-28

There was a test-tube experiment for Canyon Lake as the crowd at Hawk Stadium was seeing a ‘microcosm’ of their season in this one game.
You remember how this year started with six losses and each part of their game suffered.
Offense was clinking to start the season, then it was the defense turn as they were giving a bus load of points and how about those games where the special teams were not that special.
This game had it all as Canyon Lake started by allowing the Greyhounds to return a kick-off to the Hawks 32 yard line….then the defense was defenseless while playing Ole defense as Boerne waltzed down the field in just 5 plays for a score.

Both teams would banter back and forth when Boerne started with good field position once again after a Hawk 18 yard punt (special teams).
Add a Hawk unsportsmanlike penalty to the mix and the Greyhounds only had to drive for 23 yards for their next touchdown.
Hawks stalled again and then Boerne would drive 70 yards on 9 plays and all of a sudden the quiet crowd was sitting on their hands and could only mutter utterances of disbelief.
The score? 21-0 in favor of the visitors.
Boerne was coming into this game with credentials that would not impress a lot of football teams as they had not had great stand out games yet during district play.
Well, the Greyhound’s performance during the first part of this game had people wondering if Boerne could run or solve Obamacare.
A 21 point lead by halftime would speak volumes for this woeful 0-3 team that came out of the phone booth with their Superman Cape on.
The Hawks meanwhile would have another long drive of 14 plays that ended with an interception and another lost opportunity after entering Boerne’s red zone.
Whatever was said at halftime must have worked as Canyon Lake’s Josh DeVries ran back the kick-off 80 yards taking 14 seconds off the clock and you could sense a momentum change.
“We did not come out ready to play,” Head Coach Charlie Drum said. “We were not loud at halftime and we just reminded them that we could still pull this game off. Then we came out ready to play with a kick-off return, then our defense had a stop and then game on…”
One problem with an offense that likes to chew up seconds on a game clock is overcoming a 21 point deficit.
Well that 21 point lead was now 15 points after the point after was blocked, Boerne would answer with an 8 play 56 yard drive and an increased lead was back up to 22 points with 5:40 left in the third quarter.
The Hawks still had time, but now the Hawks would have to have a perfect game with very few, if any, mistakes.
Canyon Lake would answer when Hayden DuBois ran it in from one yard out with a drive that took just 3:40 off the clock and whittled the lead back to a 14 points after Quarterback Skyler Tschoepe ran the two point conversion in.
How about an onside kick (microcosm moment) as now the offense was starting to perform like they needed to and the special teams started to do special things needed for a comeback to come to fruition.

Shane Relkin recovered the ball which helped him redeem that kick-off return when he lost his footing earlier.
Canyon Lake would drive 44 yards more methodically and DeVries would run the last 7 yards for the score and now it was just a 7 point lead for Boerne.
The choke hold was now around the Greyhound’s necks as Boerne had a two play drive with a fumble that Austin aCosta—Costa them and now CL would tie the score with a 53 yard drive.
Eight running plays later DuBois was scoring again and the Hawks would kick the point and put the game in the hands of CL’s defense.
Wait a minute, another great coaching move from Coach Drum as he put his Sophomore Quarterback in the game to execute a perfect pitched running play to DeVries for the 2pt conversion and a lead with 4:40 left in the fourth quarter.
There of course was more to that series of downs as Tschoepe was injured on an earlier series which forced the Coaches to insert Hayden Lee to call the signals. First time this year that someone besides Tschoepe was calling signals.
Earlier in this game, back in the first quarter, an injury to Tommy Clark could also be calculated in the decision process for running the extra point in versus kicking.
The Hawks lost two players that hold the ball on extra points for Mike Thorpe and the Coaches just abandoned the pat and decided that going for it was their best option.
Wow, a 29-28 lead was just what the Doctor ordered, however, with 4:40 still left on the clock this game was far from over.
Another ‘Microcosm’ moment as Canyon Lake’s defense would put up a gallant stand after Boerne passed for a first down to the Hawk’s 23 yard line there was still three minutes left to play.
Two incompletions and a play that Christian Dittman grabbed the jersey of Boerne’s Bobby Johnson for a one yard gain, the Greyhounds trotted out their kicker, Greg Dennard for a 39 yard field goal try and a lead.
The ball had the distance but was wide left and Canyon Lake could run out the clock with a couple of first downs.
Thank-you defense for only allowing one touchdown during the second half.
This last Hawk drive would feature two backs that would break the 100 yard barrier, Hayden DuBois and McGuire Johnson.
Johnson ran the first two plays for 34 yards with his last going for 31 yards and a Hawk first down on Boerne’s 44 yard line. Then, DuBois would get two carries for 44 yards including a 38 yarder, which was DuBois longest run this year and a score.
DeVries ran the point after in (since CL did not have a holder for the kick) and another nemesis (Boerne) would be struck down by the Hawks who were now flying high.
The 22 point comeback win was largest in Hawk history and Canyon Lake now will be going into Navarro next week owners of a 3 game winning streak and ticket punched for a playoff dance in two weeks.
