CL Hawks Softball Play Hardball, Win 2 of 3 Games
Cameron Berger saves her best for her last at bat with a single driving in two runs in the last inning
for a one run win over Pearsall Mavericks, 5-4 at Navarro’s Tournament.
Canyon Lake finished their first day with a 2-1 record with a 13-12 loss to Connally and a win over Gonzales, 11-6 in their earlier games on Thursday.
“I am very pleased with how we played,” Head Coach John Gallagher said. “We did well offensively and hit the ball well and bunted well.”
The Hawks are so young that even their one of two seniors is Brianna YOUNG.
Freshman and Sophomores ‘make up’ many new faces, in fact, they might be so young that they don’t wear ‘make up’.
Canyon Lake had two outs when the rallied for a win in the bottom of that 5th inning. After the ump announced the time limit was up, this Hawk team then brought Tiare Kacir up who quickly made first base after the Mavs misplayed a grounder.
With two on and two outs, Kat Weber, drew a four pitch walk loading the bases for Berger who took a 2-0 pitch into right field scoring two runs needed for a win.
“I was just listening to Coach and he was telling me to wait for my pitch,” Sophomore Berger said. “I feel we are much further along even with all the freshman playing, we are excited for this season.”
Berger was commenting on her thoughts of what this year could look like as well as her winning hit.
Alexis Robinson calmed down after a shaky first inning. Three runs scored on 32 pitches and two of the three Pearsall hits also happened by the fourth batter that came to the plate.
“I started off slow,” Sophomore Pitcher Robinson pitched. “I was getting angry about the situation I was in and I just needed to pitch the ball and get into my groove.”
Robinson’s first inning compared to her next four:
Robinson ip r er h bb so hp balls-strikes total
First Inning 1 3 2 2 2 3 0 11-21 32
Next 4 Innings 4 1 0 1 0 6 2 20-37 57
Getting into a groove was important for Robinson as she coasted through the 2nd and 3rd inning throwing only 3 balls and dousing any momentum gained for the Mavericks in that first inning.
Canyon Lake had a good first day with several hits and this Hawk club has already passed the
number of home runs in their history with three for the day. The club record since play started six years ago was one set last year and 2009.
Kelsey Ahrens will be a fun player to watch as well as Robinson who had dinger during the day. This type of hard ball has not been seen in the parts for a long time (or ever).
Ahrens was also able to give Robinson some rest pitching in the circle and getting a win over Gonzales.
Canyon Lake will take the field Saturday, for another three game day and hopefully more wins to boot.
