Comparing This Year’s Hawk team with Last Season

Canyon Lake played 24 games last season and The ReSporter wanted to compare this year with

those accomplishments from that 2013 campaign.

The Hawks will complete their first go round in district play this coming Thursday in Navarro and looking at these two years statistically is quite eye opening.

Comparing the offenses is dramatic.

The 2013 year’s team scored 128 runs while this year’s club has a high water mark of 179, a solid 50 runs better.

Base hits have increased by 34 along with more power as Brianna Young has matched her round tripper last season and added Kelsey Ahrens’ (2) and Alexis Robinson’s (4) to that resume.

You can can come up with your own deductions by going over these numbers below, but The ReSporter would like to bring up one item that might be overlooked in that offensive side.

In their win over Boerne, Canyon Lake had runs that were scored by bases loaded walks.

That is one of the best indicators on how good a team is doing in the batters box.

CL has three batters in double figures in this category led by Robinson’s 18 trips to first base.

Last season Robinson finished with four walks total for the season….In fact, Young was the only Hawk with double figures in this category with 14 last year.

Young already has matched that number and with freshman Kat Weber’s 11 free passes it has given CL a total of 73 vs. 47 from last season.

Power hitter Ahrens finished with four walks a year ago while she stands in with seven this year. With two more walks, Ahrens will match her total for her career in her first two seasons.

You can’t make this stuff up, this Hawk team has speed from several players. Last season McKenna Beseda had half of CL’s steals, but this year Carly Dubois is lighting it up with 14 thefts and several other players will be threatening double figures.

That speed is also seen in how many hits this year’s team can turn an infield bunt into a single by beating the throw to first.

Yes, their record does not indicate a break out year, but simply put, Canyon Lake only needs one of the other two facets of softball to improve and a team with a 1-3 district record could easily switch to 3-1 instead.

Robinson is certainly a key for this metamorphoses in the circle as the Robinson we saw last year was seen in her game with Boerne as she controlled the game by only giving up one walk and having movement on her pitches.

Canyon Lake might have a run in their second half of district play as this team has been searching for a first baseman this season and with the addition of Lizzy Henderson doing an adequate job in only two games, just might be what the doctored ordered in getting this team over the hump.

Being a young team and fitting those pieces together might just give fans for this year a good ride in the excitement department.

Good Luck Hawks.
