Hawks Finish San Marcos Tourney with a 3-4 record
The CL Hawks tripled their pleasure on Saturday as their 7 games in two days came to a
close at the San Marcos Softball Tournament.
Canyon Lake finished non-district play with a healthy dose of games as they ready for their opening game this coming Tuesday at home against the Fredericksburg Billies.
In the Hawks game with Socorro, CL had 4 triples, scored three runs in three of their innings, and won the third game of this tournament.
The Hawks deviated from their lineup in this game and reaped some benefits when Alexis Robinson responded with three rbi with her two triples while batting third and not lead off.
“I haven’t been batting as well, leading off and Coach just wanted to do some switching,” Robinson crusoed. “This lineup allowed us to get our speedsters on and they are good contact hitters…Carly (who took Robinson’s lead off spot) said she could see the pressure you have as lead-off and you don’t have room for mistakes.”
Pitcher Kelsey Ahrens also had two triples giving the Hawks a first ever four triples in one game record as she batted clean up.
Ahrens had no walks or earned runs as she continued to show an all-around effort offensively, defensively, and in the circle.
“Whatever I have to do for the team and do the best as I can,” Ahrens stated.
“She (Ahrens) pitched well,” Head Coach John Gallagher said. “She knew she had to throw and just performed well.”
On hitting two triples in the game, Ahrens commented, “It felt good, I usually pull the ball but I went with the pitch this time…this will boost our confidence back up.”
Carly DuBois also finished the game with two hits and two stolen bases with her lead-off duties.
On changing up the lineup, Coach Gallagher traveled. “We moved the lineup to give us a spark and we knew after our performance in our earlier game we had to come out and play because we are better than that game.”
Now Canyon Lake will see just how prepared they will be when Fredericksburg comes to town this coming Tuesday, it is time for the real season to start.
“Fredericksburg will be a tough game,” Coach Gallagher closed.
