Hawks Lose First District 27-3A Game to Billies, 7-4

Canyon Lake lost a frustrating game to Fredericksburg to open District 27-3A play at the Hawk diamond

Wednesday night, 7-4.

Frustrating is the best word to describe this outcome as Fredericksburg turned into an opportunistic team to scratch across enough runs to get separation on the Hawks.

“We did not make plays we needed to make,” Head Coach Trent Dunavant started. “Those little plays were made big plays and we did not keep our foot on the gas on offense.”

Cody Powell was throwing a gem going into the fifth inning when an error on a bunt spelled doom and eventually four runs for the Billies.

That error was scored when Powell slipped on the slick grass trying to get bunt ball to first base.

Then another error on that next at bat when the ball was dropped on a play for what would of been the second out.

Fredericksburg batted seven players in the inning and Powell still only threw 17 pitches in this inning. Not much more than 2 or 3 pitches per batter.

The damage was done when Freddy finished with a single and double scoring those final runs in that fifth inning.

Meanwhile, the Hawks did not get a hit since after two singles in the second, until Nick Cahill singled in the sixth inning driving in one of CL’s two runs to inch to within three runs for a tie.

Cahill has been the Hawks most consistent hitter so far this year being the player with multiple hits in this contest.

“I have been focusing in practice and working on getting my timing down,” Centerfielder Cahill said. “When I want to load and put my foot up and then down and ready to hit.”

On what the Hawks need to take from this game, Cahill was quick with his answer, “Stay focused on the little things and need to make play on defense.”

Frustration comes when you finished a game wondering how a team scored seven runs with 11 strikeouts and having only one hit in that fateful 5th inning that went past the infield.

Canyon Lake will be back in action this next Tuesday when they travel to Band/era to see if they can use the first part of that name to strike up the band and have a parade with a victory.
