District 27-3A team showed why they are on top of the heap in this win, 7-2.

Boerne has a long resume and with their strong pitching and timely hitting it was hard for the Hawks to get an upper hand.

“We had two innings where we bumped it up,” Head Coach Trent Dunavant said. “Boerne play the game year round, if we play defense then we can play our game.”

Canyon Lake did show glimpses of giving this opponent a surprise when they responded by working out of a bases loaded and no out jam in the second inning.

One single and two errors were the culprit but a hard line shot to short-stop Corey Shedrock and quick throw to second baseman TJ Jones completed a double play with an easy pop out to first baseman Colton Avey ended that threat.

Boerne who was averaging 11 runs per game finally broke the ice with three runs in the next inning when their lineup responded with three hits, the last one, a triple scoring two runs and giving this Greyhound team enough cushion for a win.

Pitcher Nick Kissel pitched another strong game in holding this offensive Greyhound team through most of this outing.

“He (Kissel) pitched outstanding,” Coach Dunavant said without hesitation. “Without those two innings we showed we could stay with them….but we can’t live in the past and have to live in the present.”

Kissel was a workhorse throwing over 100 pitches, “You know going into it, that this Boerne, but you just have to treat it as another game….you just have to play the game and we have the defense.”

Kissel had three strikeouts and relied on some good plays in the infield to keep this game within reach.

Canyon Lake was not finished when they answered with 2 runs in the bottom of the second inning getting within striking distance.

Garrett Winters started the inning with a single and was moved to second with a nice sacrifice off the bat of JJ Nance.

Corey Shedrock responded with an rbi double scoring Winters and after advancing to third base on a wild pitch, scored when Tyler Vinson hit into a fielders choice for the second out.

Canyon Lake will play Navarro this Friday with a chance to dispose of one district team they are tied with in second place.

Navarro will be coming off a humbling loss to Bandera, while Wimberley beat Fredericksburg and also find themselves in a three way tie for that second spot in district.

Wimberley plays at Boerne this Friday which will be a game that could log jam the top of district or with a win, give CL second place all by itself.
