Hawks End 8 Game Losing Streak in Win over Clemens
Canyon Lake made a statement in their first game for this 2014 Volleyball season.
Schertz Clemens went down in defeat, 3-1 after winning their first game. CL took care of their unforced net violations and swept Clemens in their next three games.
Last year, the Hawks, started with a 0-3 whitewashing to this same school and with some good passing, rallies, and communication Canyon Lake had an ‘A’ game with this win.
Canyon Lake also said good-bye to that nasty 8 game losing streak they had in district play to end last season.
The Hawks had a similar situation as last year when CL started their season with these same two teams.
Clemens won in three games with little resistance as graduate Amber Ramsey finished with 7 kills and 3 blocks. Hayley Melone counted 10 digs and then freshman Regan Mickey with 11 assists.
This year? Bailey Drum with 19 kills, Melone upped her digs to 20, and Miss Mickey had a whopping 43 assists.
What a difference a year makes.
“We are executing better,” Head Coach Kim Paisley paused. “We are swinging to win and last year we swung to kill. We have more people getting quicks and our middles are better at holding hitters.”
Clemens might not be as good as they were last season, but playing a 6A team might certainly mean that Canyon Lake will certainly be nominated as playing better after their first game.
In that opening game the Hawks opened with unforced errors out the wazoo which was evident in helping Clemens waltz for an easy 25-16 pasting.
Last year’s squad might have mailed it in after that game, but this was not the case on this cold day inside the Hawk gym.
“This group are fighters and they are mentally tougher,” Coach Paisley said. “Yes, there were certain times they missed some points but they have much more consistency.”
Canyon Lake finished off Clemens in four games with a sweep after that first game. That was not a scene seen often in years past.
“We are showing teams that this year is our year,” Junior Bailey Drum beat. “We are a different team.”
To say the least.
Coach Paisley has a style during games that you can usually count on…she does not call a lot of time outs and allows her team to play out of bad spells.
In their last win, 25-22, the Hawks were enjoying a decent lead when Clemens had a rally and closed the gap.
That rare time out was called and Canyon Lake came out of that session with Coach focused. The result was a pass and kill stopping any momentum gained by the visitors.
“We try to relax and just listen,” Drum said. “Then we came out and played our game.”
Play their game they did with a hard fought good first win.
The Hawks took Liberty Hill to a 5 game match in their second contest but fell just short of starting the season on a rare two game streak.
Liberty Hill is a Senior oriented team and that bodes well for a Hawk team that still is working on their baby teeth.
Last year this was another game that did not take long to play as the Panthers swept the Hawks.
What a difference a year makes with a 5 game marathon and making a statement that this team will not succumb as easily as last season.
Canyon Lake will now take their short drive to Wimberley for the Tex-Fest Tournament this week as this season now goes into hyper speed with a slew of games.
This a fun year to see how many teeth this team can grow as they team prepares for district. Good Luck!!
