CLJV Defense Becomes Offensive in Win, 34-6 over Smithville

Canyon Lake’s JV team has now won two more games than last year as the Hawks awakened in the second half and inflicting damage on Smithville, without using their offense.

The game was still much in doubt at halftime as both teams struggled to get enough positive plays to counteract some missed snaps and penalties.

“We made too many mistakes and we have some things to work hard on in practice,” Head JV Coach Jon Barthels assessed. “I’m happy with this game, the way we finished in the second half, it sometimes just takes a while to get going.”

Second half yardage was all in turnovers and short fields as one touchdown was a fumble recovery in the end zone, another was a result of a 78 yard interception return to the Tiger’s two yard line.

CL took 1:40 off the clock with a four play 37 yard drive and on their next drive was even more to the point scoring on a two play 49 yard drive taking only 0:51 off the clock.

Smithville started the second half with 49 yards rushing and after the Tigers 13 running plays for this half, they totaled -14 yards and finished the game with 35 yards.

Most of this damage was inflicted by Tyler McCleary and Heath McDonough.

McCleary was the recipient of recovering a Smithville fumble in the end zone and then he added to the Tigers woes, with a sack for minus nine yards on their next play after the kick-off.

McCleary had another sack and was basically in the Smithville backfield so much he could have changed his jersey and played for the bad guys.

“They had a slow line and I just lined up wide,” McCleary stated. “I would just look to Coach Hodges for stunts.”

McCleary would also like to thank Charlie McIntosh for causing the fumble allowing his touchdown in the second half. “Thanks Charlie for hitting them hard enough allowing them to drop it.”

Defensive Back Austin Camacho then waylaid a Tiger receiver on the next play allowing McDonough to recover the ball for another short drive.

McDonough also had two interceptions off of tip passes, with the last interception helping with a two yard drive to paydirt.

“I should have dove for the touchdown,” a retrospective McDonough said. “Our momentum just started going in this game…we just need to make our practices and that is a big deal.”

Those comments were based on some JV players that did not get into the game until the second half based on missing practices this week.

McDonough would also like to throw out a thank-you to a couple of players, “Thank-you (Sam) Spurlock and (Austin) Comacho for tipping the passes for me.”

The Hawks completed just one pass and McDonough was so wide open he could of walked past the goal line for the score. That was the only touchdown in the first half as CL finished with 99 total yards.

Defensively, the Hawks held Smithville to 64 yards in that same time period, but with just a seven point lead, that advantage was certainly not safe.

Turnovers then became a thing of beauty as Canyon Lake had a plethora of miscues forced upon the home team that the seven point lead had a much better, pleasing to the eyes, 28-0 score entering that last stanza.

Congrats Hawks!!
