CL Hawks Cross Country Boy’s Finish 3rd in District & Qualify for Region
Hawks Boys Cross Country team makes history with their first time to qualify for Regions when they finished in third place in last week’s District 26-4A Meet in Navarro.
Canyon Lake’s Girls team also had a fifth place finish at the meet.
“I know that it has been very exciting for us to see such a great pay off for the hard work they have put in this season,” Head Cross Country Coach Mary Beth Gallahger said excitedly. “We have great young runners who will hopefully get a taste of what a regional is like and be hungry to return next season.”
Senior Christy Fowler finished 15th for the girls Varsity while the Hawks had three JV girls medal.
Sydney Young, Kaylie Yuill, and Amira Allen helped in giving the JV Hawk Girls a 3rd place finish in District 26-4A, last Wednesday meet.
For the Varsity Boy’s, Senior Nash Opperman was the man as he finished 10th in the meet which would of qualified as an individual.
Canyon Lake has not had much success in this sport and now the curtain has been pulled open by this crew and a chance of competing in a whole different realm.
“This was definitely a team effort,” Opperman started running. “This feels good to make history as a team and this always be known as a team that made it.”
Coach Mary Beth Gallagher probably did not touch the ground until she reached home that night.
“I am hoping that this success will catapult us to the next level,” Coach Gallagher said. “I am very proud of Nash (Opperman) as he has really been the catalyst to this team. He has lead this boy’s team and has pushed himself all season.”
“Actually this course was one our hardest courses for this season,” Opperman said when responding about a question on how this course compared to other meets this season.
Now Canyon Lake will go where no Cross Country team has gone before.
“I want to look for a personal best and show that I deserve this team will also compete at our highest level,” Opperman said with resolve.
“He has been a great leader and has challenged his teammates and that is one reason the boys have made it to regionals,” Coach Gallagher said without any reservations. “Nash hopes to run for Shriiner College and he has set some great goals and I can’t be more proud of how he has accomplished many of them. Go Hawks!”
Canyon Lake can now get a T-Shirt company busy as the Boy’s Team will be ready to make more history as they will take the course this coming Saturday, November 1st.
And as Coach Mary Beth said so eloquently, Go Hawks!!
