JV Hawks Volleyball Jump Higher in Win over Texans
Canyon Lake’s JV beat Wimberley, 25-21, 21-25, 25-23 on Tuesday night to stay unbeaten in District 26-4A play.

A hoarse Head Coach Megan Helmey started, “My girls have been working on being mentally tough and you saw how well they carried that out….I have no complaints, Landry Hollums was going all over the place and really stepped up in that last set.”
“We were executing the ball and we knew that Wimberley was going to get the ball over with a game changer with a tip or what they had been doing,” Coach Helmey commented on what was happening in her conversation with the girls during their final time-out. “I am proud of the girls and how they handled it.
The crowd was totally into this game as both schools had a lot of support.
“I came from a 5A school and I had never seen a crowd like that,” Sophomore Kaylie Duke said. “This was awesome….I knew that all of the sports are so important for Canyon Lake and this was so important for our school and our Volleyball team came together.”
Freshman Faith Hasness had a six point serve which started with a 16-17 score in favor of Wimberley to a 22-17 advantage for the Hawks.
“We were talking a lot more and we were playing more consistent,” Hasness said. “That helped us have a good fight and it got us comfortable.”
The Hawks would go ahead and win the first set of this game staving off the Texans by four points, 25-21.

In that second set, Wimberley had the Hawks down by three points for much of the set and then forging ahead 12-17 when Coach Megan Helmey called a Hawk time-out.
CLJV would respond with five service points in their next two rotations to take a 21-20 lead.
The Texans would win five of the next six points to pull the game even at a set a piece, 21-25.
As the crowd started filling in for the Varsity match, the stands started to sound like a Varsity Playoff game as both sides of the gym got into this heated match.
The Hawks started slow again and found themselves looking at a two point deficit, 1-3 and 2-4.
This second set had five ties and 15 one point leads as this affair continued to go back and forth.
CLJV was down, 16-19 when they started their comeback while outscoring the Texans JV, 9-4 to win the deciding best of three match.
Landry Hollums and the rest of this Hawk team was getting a dose of adrenaline as this set was destined to be won by Canyon Lake.
“I think our whole team wanted to beat our biggest rival,” Hollums said with a resolute voice.
On how she was playing at the end of this set, Hollums commented, “I just wanted to win and when I want to win, then I will not want to stop and that just helps me to jump even higher.”
Now, a club that started slow at the beginning of this season, is now in a position to jump higher and finish first in district play. That thought might not have been on anybody’s mind as this year was getting started.
Six of the JV’s roster had two or more kills in this match with Katherine Weber leading that charge with eight, followed by five a piece from Kaylie Duke and Felicity Niestremski.
The Freshman team had a good game too when they forced a third set after winning to tie the match up.
CL Freshman had a lead throughout that second set by as many as four points a few times with that being the final deficit for Wimberley when the Hawks finished giving a rare loss to this Texan team.
Overall a very good night for Canyon Lake as the Sub-Varsities raised the bar that there will be more competition for Wimberley as the next four years pass.
