District Recap and Hawk Stuff:

Wimberley made their statement last week as they put a whipping on the Hawks and took the inside track for their 16th straight district championship.

Canyon Lake and Navarro have put some distance between them and three other teams that look to be fighting it out for that fourth playoff spot.

This Week’s big game will be in Wimberley as Navarro will battle the Texans and try to derail a team that will be a solid favorite for their next six district games.

Yoakum, La Vernia and Cuero beat each other and find themselves a collective 2 games away from Navarro.

That will make the La Vernia and Yoakum game on Tuesday an interesting contest as Yoakum beat the Bears in that first round. La Vernia will need a win in order to even that score for tie breakers as this second half of district gets started.

One of CL’s toughest games in that first round was against Yoakum and this time they will play the Bulldogs on the road and a win will put a good hold for a playoff spot unless their wheels fall off.

Yes, that did happen last year, but the Hawks only had one win during the first round and would have needed some magic to change their plight.

Go Hawks!!

Hawk Stuff:

Canyon Lake kept their second place spot in District 16-4A when they went five sets in their win over La Vernia on Friday night.

The Hawks are now 2-1 on five set matches for this season and have matched their most wins for any season with 25.

That total was reached in CL’s second year when they reached the first round of playoffs and finished that season, 25-15. The Hawks finished third that year in district and there was only three teams that could qualify for a playoff chance in those days.

Canyon Lake was beaten by Devine in that first round in five sets after being down 2-0 and rallying to tie the contest up before losing 15-10 and a chance to go further.

Some names and numbers from the past that forged that historic campaign that was Canyon Lake’s first ever team to qualify for post season action.

 Sara Wozniak 1

Now Canyon Lake will embark on the second half of their district contests with hopes of setting new benchmarks.

1) Chance of finishing higher than 3rd in district play
2) Chance of going further than the first round in playoffs
3) Chance of having the most win total in their history. They are tied now with 25.
4) Chance of finishing season with fewest losses. Standing at 9 losses now & 15 is that barrier.
5) Have already set goals for future teams with a 10 game winning streak.
6) Finishing on the platform in all three pre-district tournaments.
7) Most matches with sweep. (2-0 & 3-0 games) Have 20 and previous best was ’09 team with 13.
8) Being ranked 20th in the State according to Texas Girls Coaches Association.
9) If Canyon Lake can win their last three home games, then they would finish with an .800 percentage beating the 2009 percentage of .769. That Hawk team was 10-3 that season.
