Bracken Falls Short in their Quest for State
Bracken Christian finished their season battling all the way in their loss to Veritas, 62-13.
“I hate going out this way for the Seniors,” Head Coach Lloyd Fields said. “The team stepped up and played very well…we never quit and did we did not quit in August when we knew we would be outmanned and outnumbered…but this team fought all the way.”
The Warriors still had problems in recovering that dastardly on-side kick helping speed up this loss.
Veritas controlled the line of scrimmage especially with their defensive line and the Warriors just did not have enough bodies to put up enough resistance against that line’s onslaught onto whoever the Bracken player with the ball would be.
Noah Boriack could only throw his passes away for many of the plays as he struggled to get open to find a receiver or get open to run.
“We started off slow and up until about 36 points it finally hit that this would be our last game,” Boriack said. “We gave it our all and showed heart when the game was finished.”
The passing game had been a strength for BCS but with a team that was doing what they wanted on defense the inevitable end of season would be the result.
Bracken did have two scores and in that first half, they received the ball in Veritas’ territory when Boriack ran 32 yards on his first play and giving a boost and cutting the lead for The Defenders, 22-6.
Later in the second half, Veritas, had some players that were a little out of control as BCS decided to let some of the back line players in the game.
That next running play for Joshua Chu had two players taking some cheap shots and then with some extra things going on in that group of players.
After a 15 yard unsportsmanlike penalty giving the Warriors a first down, Coach Fields and Bracken decided that his team would not succumb so easily and used four more plays to get another score.
Senior Coy Zunker was once again all over the field as he finished up a stellar campaign.
Zunker is Zealous in his Zeal for playing this Zgame. “Ever since I was younger, I have had to prove myself and I did not want anyone to look down on me,” Zunker said with Zest. “You have to carry yourself with character and use that to beat all odds and do it all for the Glory of God.”
Zunker finished this year in fourth place overall in tackles for his career at BCS, finishing with 157 and seven interceptions.
Senior Jeff Camp was brutal on his runs as he administered some pain to this Defender team.
“It was more of a statement runs,” Camp camped out. “It was Noah’s last game and I wanted to finish for him and just finish the game for both of us.”
Then Quarterback Brady Beene completed his next two passes to Cristian DeLeon with the last pass for 12 yards finding the sure handed DeLeon in the end zone on a fade route.
That combination might be seen for more years as this combo of players reside in the Freshman and Sophomore class.
“We did not want to give up and we played until the whistle blows,” DeLeon said. “It was the Seniors last game and we never stopped playing and never gave up.”
Boriack was hurt on a 10 yard run in the second quarter and did not return in this game which was 80 percent of Bracken’s offensive power.
With so little manpower to choose from, this game was over when they helped this Warrrior off the field.
Boriack and Camp were two of those Bracken players that will be taking a lot of BCS receiving records with him when they graduate.
This year was about as good as it could be based on so few players to help out when injuries and just having enough to practice during the week.
Bracken can only be proud of this season and how this team played out every game with class and heart.
“The players that are left are the Team now,” Boriack said eloquently. “Find your leader and step up and fill those shoes.”
Next year is not that far off as Bracken will be in their 10th year of 6-Man Football and hoping for more victories.
