Bracken Uses Gravitas in Win over Covenant, 39-8
Bracken Christian won their playoff game against a tough and frustrated Conroe Covenant team, 39-8.
“This was the first time we dressed out all of our team,” Head Coach Lloyd Fields said. “There is always safety in numbers.”
Another game with a box of band-aids needed at it’s conclusion.
“The game was pretty physical,” Coach Fields said while fixing an owlee. “We had some bumps and bruises but everyone gets those by this time of year.”
The Warriors stepped out to a quick 19 point lead as Noah Boriack found a target that will be on top of all the receiving marks when this season comes to a close in Jeff Camp for a 24 yard touchdown pass.
Camp has now the top five receiving yardage for Bracken’s record book. Camp also holds four of the five best receptions numbers with Grant Granato being the only player to be in the fray.
“It always helps to have a receiver like Jeff (Camp), he is like Calvin Johnson…you just throw the ball up there and he will catch it.”
With 1396 yards receiving, Camp also holds the career mark for that category while only needing 55 yards before passing RJ Braune for most yardage for a season.
Another player that will make a mark on several records, Cristian DeLeon intercepted a Covenant ball protecting Bracken’s end zone and returning the ball 46 yards for the Warriors to set up shop on Covenant’s 25 yard line.
“I don’t know what he does, but he has a way of always getting open,” Spread Back Boriack said.
From there it took just two plays when Boriack threw to Brady Beene for a 12 yard gain and then a Boriack 13 yard run to give the Warriors a 12 point lead in what would be enough points to win this game.
“Brady (Beene) is a good escape receiver and he can get decent yardage,” Boriack quipped.
A four play turnover on downs allowed Bracken another chance to add onto their lead which they did when Boriack found Camp again for 56 yards to Conroe’s 7 yard line.
Beene would be the recipient again for what would be his first touchdown receiving for the Sophomore.
Bracken would hold Conroe’s offense for the rest of the half and a Warrior lead, 19-0.
Last year during the first round of playoffs, Bracken was beat when they scored right before half but a kick-off return for a touchdown changed the momentum for that early exit from the playoffs.
That certainly would not be the case on this night as Bracken took care of those little things that can wreak havoc in a game.
Covenant did come out of their halftime chat with a touchdown drive that covered 48 yards on all rushing plays with only one play for 11 yards was that would be considered explosive.
Bracken would answer that score when they drove 53 yards on six plays and Boriack would run it in for one of his three touchdowns.
Boriack has been in a ‘Mash’ unit this as he has to use a lot of glue to keep all of his limbs together before each game.
“I’m not as bad as earlier this year,” Boriack said with a medical mask over his mouth. “My back is troubling me but other than that, I’m ok.”
After another stout defensive stop, BCS was in business again with a three play drive and a 43 yard run from Boriack to all but ice this game, 33-8.
Bracken’s defense stopped Covenant on eight of their nine drives which frustrated many on this team as the game got testy near the end of regulation.
Senior Coy Zunker was up in Eli Achilles territory when he finished with 20 tackles and being joined by Jeff Camp (11) and Boriack (10).
DeLeon also had a good game with five tackles and that important interception to start the game.
Now Bracken will get ready to play a team that pretty much had their number when they played this year.
Austin Veritas had a bye week and will certainly be ready to play this coming Saturday.
“Looking back on film, we were pretty passive when we played them,” Boriack said like a Head Coach. “Their on-side kick did have some funky bounces…but I feel like our younger guys have stepped up in their play since then.”
This win with Conroe also had some milestones for Coach Fields, as he hit 100 wins coaching 6-man football.
“This team has more grits, guts, and gravitas,” Coach said with an accent.
