CL Hawks Freshman Team Sting the Llano Yellowjackets, 50-46
Canyon Lake’s Freshman team held off the Llano Yellowjackets after running out to a six point lead in the first half and won with defense and clutch free throw shooting, 50-46, last Tuesday night before the Thanksgiving break.
“They are all new to me,” Head Freshman Coach Javier Almanza said. “I am trying to get used to them and them with me…they are learning to speed of the game.”
“They started pretty well and handling the press,” Coach Almanza continued. “But then we settled down and we had to get back to what we were doing (earlier in the game).”
Llano got their first lead, 35-33 at the two minute mark of the third period as these Yellowjackets were stinging mad coming out of their halftime break.
The lead got as much as six points, 40-34 as Canyon Lake was stuck on that 26 point level until Joseph Boyd was able to sink two free throws to finally get the second half going.
“This was our first home game and Coach said that we were rushing and taking bad shots,” Boyd said astutely.
On how this team was doing compared to last season at Mountain Valley, “Not much has changed,” Boyd said. “We still staying about the same as last year, but communication is sometimes a problem and today we did pretty good.”
Those two free throws increased the lead back to two points but Llano was still relentless as they ballooned their lead to that six point advantage later in that third quarter.
Canyon Lake did start answering the bell and when Hank Jordan sank his free throw at the five minute mark of the fourth quarter and the lead would last until the end of this game.
“We focused more and we were trying to get where we needed to be based on what they were doing,” Jordan stated. “Our communication is getting their but we need to get more comfortable playing together.”
On how it feels playing in his first game at home as a High Schooler, “Feels pretty good.”
Good free throw shooting when the Hawks needed it the most and a lot of balance coming off the bench was the difference in this game as Llano just did not have the manpower to keep up with these young Hawks.
Boyd and Jordan both reached double digit scoring with 16 and 12 respectfully. With nine players getting into the books by scoring showed the depth in CL’s victory.
Looking at the totals and seeing 11 assists and 14 steals tells the average fan that this team can get better once they learn each other’s strengths and weaknesses.
Communication will only help as this season progresses.
A good win and hopefully more to come.
Go Hawks!!
