Coaches Corner with CL’s Charley Drum:

Canyon Lake’s Head Coach Charley Drum

The ReSporter: Tell us where the team is mentally and physically for this week’s game?

Coach Drum: “We are pretty healthy, we have some nicks, but this is probably the best we have been health wise for this season.”

The ReSporter: I know Ian May was hurt last week, what is his status?

Coach Drum: “Ian had a season ending surgery and so he will be our only starter out for this game.”

The ReSporter: Who do you have to take May’s spot in the line?

Coach Drum: “We will probably have Freshman Jacob Foster.”

The ReSporter: Tell us about Waco LaVega.

Coach Drum: “They run a spread offense and they are young and fast….they are faster than Taylor and they have more kids that can move.”

The ReSporter: Last week you mentioned that you were wanting to get a stop per quarter by your defense, does that remain one key aspect to this week’s game?

Coach Drum: “Yes, even your best offenses make mistakes and we will need to capitalize on those opportunities, but we need to get a turnover or get them on downs and a punt.”

The ReSporter: Will this be another Boerne game with both teams going back and forth?

Coach Drum: “Boerne’s defense looks better than LaVega up the middle and we will just need to find out what works best for our offense. Lampasas had 500 yards rushing against LaVega so that certainly gives us hope….but we will stick to our bread and butter when we take the field.”

The ReSporter: LaVega has a receiver that gets most of the catches for the Pirates, does he remind you of David Snelling for Boerne in last week’s game?

Coach Drum: “Snelling runs better routes and is more of a system receiver and he is not as fast as their go to guy. Their receiver just goes up and gets the ball and is more athletic.”

The ReSporter: You have mentioned being able to clean up those little mistakes in order to win those close games what is the key to doing that?

Coach Drum: “We have reduced our turnovers and have a plus seven in district but we just have to produce in the fourth quarter and create a break.”

The ReSporter: Final thoughts?

Coach Drum: “They have had some close games too but we will need to be have our timing down offensively and finish.”

The ReSporter: Thanks Coach and good luck this Friday night.
