Canyon Lake won their Bi-District game for the third time in a row as the Hawks walked all over the Plank(ton) Pirates of Waco LaVega, 49-26 last Friday night.

“This was our first complete game for this whole season,” Head Coach Charley Drum beat. “We dominated the whole game and it just shows you how a team with seniors versus a team that was lacking with seniors can help with that experience.”

The Hawks have made the playoffs for the fourth time and this was their third time of punching their ticket for the next round.

 Year Game Score Record
 2010 Burnet 27-20 6-5
 2013 Pleasanton 24-21 4-7
 2014 Waco LaVega 49-26 5-6

It will be the next game that will make history for Canyon Lake, with a win, they will be realizing a goal of seeing just how high this playoff ladder will take this upstart group of players.

The Hawk Defense had a chance first to see what type of game that would transpire when on that first play LB Jared Bruckman laid the wood on the Pirates runner for just a one yard gain.

“The play almost turns into slow motion,” Bruckman replayed. “I saw the runner fading and I just had to go on in.”

With two more incompletions, LaVega would be punting for their only time in this contest.

Canyon Lake was unable to capitalize on their first drive as they turned the ball over on downs deep in LaVega’s territory inside the 10 yard line after driving 61 yards.

LaVega drew first blood on their next try, when Jamal Williams found Kedrick James wide open for a 67 yard pass play.

Blown coverage for the Hawks as there was no Hawk in the Waco area code and the Pirates dialed up 6-0 lead after a missed extra point.

Canyon Lake took two minutes in answering that score when Josh DeVries ran for 33 yards down the sideline and Mr. automatic, Mike Thorpe, converted the point after.

DeVries would finish with 187 yards for his best rushing game in his two years in a Hawk uniform. DeVries was the beginning and ending of this drive after starting that first play with a 22 yard run and totaled 55 on those two plays.

This drive was a good indicator that this might be one of CL’s best rushing games when they finished with 410 yards on the ground.

LaVega would respond again when Williams found Parrish Cobb for another pass for 24 yards and after missing on a two point conversion try the score read 12-7 for the Pirates.

Canyon Lake went for 64 yards with their next possession, as Hayden DuBois ran it in from 4 yards out. This was one of CL’s time consuming drives in taking six minutes off the second quarter clock.

DuBois also had his best rushing night with a bruising 165 yards with a 6.6 yards per carry clip.

With the Hawks holding a two point lead, LaVega would be facing a first and needing 20 yards after a holding call.

Mr. Dependable Tommy Clark would do something done only once in Hawk history….a returned interception for a touchdown.

Clark danced down the sideline with some nifty moves with the final result giving Canyon Lake a much needed 21-12 halftime lead and first dibs with receiving the third quarter kick-off.

“I just followed my blockers,” Clark said. “I was debating on if I should cut back inside, but (Dominick) Enea was my savior with a great block.”

CL drove the ball for 51yards after a futile Pirate on-side kick try to start the second half. Robert Woods’ great hands helped in recovering a kick that was screaming right over the mid-field stripe.

This Hawk drive was a heavy dose of DuBois as he carried the ball on five of the six plays, with that last yard increasing Canyon Lakes’ lead to 28-12.

LaVega would go into hyper speed from here on out, with their offensive pace as the CL offense was looking like they could ground out the clock on that precious commodity for the Pirates, time.

Waco LaVega covered 70 yards on 10 plays while taking just 2:18 off the clock. A Cameron Henry 25 yard run helped speed up this drive but the dye had been cast on what would be the operation for the Pirates for the rest of this half.

LaVega’s two point conversion was also converted and the score became a one possession game, 28-20.

Canyon Lake’s offense continued to churn out rushing yards as the Hawks finished off the quarter before a fumble return for 95 yards would once again put CL in a survival mode much like this season had transpired.

With momentum in favor of the Pirates, Canyon Lake stuffed the two point run and preserved the 28-26 lead for the good guys.

“Stopping that two point conversion was huge for our team as you could see how the momentum of this game has swung back to them (LaVega),” Coach Drum said.

Taking the wind out of the Pirate’s ship’s sails would happen on the Hawks next drive when they took only four plays to cover 70 yards thanks to a 59 yard pass play from Skyler Tschoepe to Evan Schuller giving CL a first and goal on LaVega’s nine yard line.

DeVries would have the honors of making the score a two possession affair once again as Thorpe was perfect with his point after kick and the Hawks with a 35-26 lead.

Thorpe has kicked 51 extra points in a row now (last year’s Bandera game was his last miss), there has been two tries that were thwarted by blocks during this streak, but when the ball is in the air, the score keeper can usually start in pushing the point button.

LaVega still had over nine minutes to stage their comeback but that idea was put on the ‘plank’ when DB Cody Powell jumped a pass and ran 64 yards for a plunge into the water for the Pirates.

Canyon Lake had scored by an interception just once in their history when Doug Hubnik returned his interception agains Luling during the 2011 season or 38 games ago.

Now, the Hawks did the trick twice on the same night as the Defense helped in giving Canyon Lake those 49 points.

The defense stopped LaVega again and then took five plays to score one last time when DeVries would scamper for a 12 yard touchdown run. This drive went 37 yards.

One more interception on a pass prevent defense, when Senior Defensive Back Garhett Grundei had perfect position on the receiver for that final step for the Pirates as this Hawk team had commandeered the ship, making the Pirates walk their own plank.

Good play by all those little things that have hindered this season with five losses by less than 7 points.
