CL Hawks Win Consolation Bracket in Marion Tourney

Canyon Lake won their last game with Lytle as the Hawks broke even in their Marion Tournament set of games, finishing 2-2.

The Hawks need to bottle whatever they are doing in that first quarter as those two middle stanza’s are just not adding up.

Canyon Lake shot a dismal 17% in their two games on Saturday during the third quarter resulting with 10 points total for those two games.

In the game with Lytle, big man Sean Nolan was a rock of Gibralter with 14 points and 12 rebounds. Add on another three blocks and CL put their team on this man’s broad shoulders to finish off these Pirates.

Tommy Clark finished with 10 points in the first game with Marion as he was the only player that could scare that double figure points mark in basketball lore.

Nolan and Clark both had 7 block shots in their first game as the Hawk team finished with 9 rejected shots total.

Sophomore Rory Preiss had the most impressive rejection as he had just committed a turnover and raced back down the court to swat the shot by the Bulldog into the wall.

The Marion ground keepers will be replacing the dent on the wall where that ball was lodged after his hustle play.

The Hawks did have to hold on in their game with Lytle as tied and then went ahead in the fourth quarter with just three minutes left in the game.

Then a minute later the Hawks had two points not counted which helped the Pirates in recapturing the lead.

The scorers table is the official place for this situation and it would not matter who scored, if those points are not counted in that book, then the shot officially did not go in.

Canyon Lake did answer the challenge when Lytle tied the score on a three point goal and moments later, Senior Skyler Tschoepe responded with a three point goal giving CL their lead that would end up after two Garrett Winters free throws helping to clinch this game.

“I just closed my eyes,” Tschoepe said when responding on how he sunk that last long distance shots.

“I did not think,” Winters commented when asked what he was thinking on his two free throws to ice the game.

Winters missed the morning game as he was busy taking his SAT tests.

The ReSporter thinks that it was easy for Winters to not having to think since he had been racking his brain most of the day taking that long test.

For Nolan, his game was really impressive as this young man has upped his game in all areas, especially from the free throw line.

Nolan was 4 for 5 for the two games played to today and was perfect in one of his games on the first day of games in the Marion tournament.

“Practice every day,” Nolan said as he sized up the basket for another shot.

Nolan also was huge (pardon the pun) underneath with his double double against Lytle.

“I had talked to Tommy (Clark) to switch with me so I could post up at the block near the basket,” Nolan said as he acted like the Coach. “They (the team) were able to get me the ball and I am just trying to get better and better with each day.”

“I was proud of how our team handled adversity,” Head Coach Lucas Chapman said. “The game should not had been that close, but we won and that is something we haven’t been able to say.”

Canyon Lake is still learning how each player’s strength on the court as each game continues to see improvement.

“We just need some practices,” Coach Chapman said. “We are still trying to learn the offense and we have run just two or three plays on that side of the court.”
