“We started playing to our game plan and started locking in defensively,” Head Coach Lucas Chapman said.

Canyon Lake was also successful when using the two big guys (Sean Nolan and Tyler Williams) as both players finished with six blocks and 19 points.

“We were trying to get the ball inside,” Coach Chapman said with his height. “That gave us some easy lay ups and Tyler (Williams) is long and athletic.”

The Hawks shot 50% from the floor in the first quarter but still found themselves down three points after the buzzer sounded ending the first stanza.

Then after holding the Apaches to three points in the second quarter, the Hawks got the momentum and never looked back winning the next three quarters for a 16 point win.

Three Hawks finished in double figure scoring with Garrett Winters and Skyler Tschoepe finishing the game with 10 points a piece.

Nolan finished with a team high 13 points while topping that number with 15 rebounds for a very impressive double/double.

“We run plays to get the ball inside,” Nolan said. “If we don’t have a shot then we can just kick it out and give the guards open shots.”

Roll players from the bench also added a key ingredient for this win with points, hustle plays and a good floor savvy.

Justin Ferris was one of those players as Coach Chapman used Ferris for key parts in that second half when the team needed a floor general.

“Coach told me to play by handling the ball and working with the team and playing my roll,” Ferris said confidently. “We will use this game as a motivation as a team that can move the ball.”

“We can get a run going and this win has our minds up and helping set up ourselves for future games,” Nolan rebounded.

Apaches apparently have more problems shooting free throws than a Hawk does as Gonzales was a sparkling 7 out of 8 from the stripe in that first quarter and then this form of scoring became a lost art.

Gonzales was a dismal 4 for 27 from the stripe after the first quarter, allowing CL to increase their lead for the rest of this game.

The Apaches did start this game making their first two shots for a quick 5-0 lead.

That would be the largest lead Gonzales would have as Canyon Lake would chip away at that lead and finally took the lead for good with a Sean Nolan put back in the second quarter at the 5:25 mark. (18-17)

With just three points for Gonzales in that second quarter allowed CL to increase their lead for halftime to six points, 25-19.

A Hawk 17 point third quarter which was helped by six points from Justin Ferris that helped give the Hawks enough energy to finish that quarter on a strong note.

The final quarter had Senior Winters getting all of his 10 points for the game with four free throws and two long distance makes beyond the arc.

Canyon Lake won their first district game since the 2009-10 season when the Hawks opened district play that season with a win over Fredericksburg.

Those Hawks also won their next game with Bandera which was the last time CL had a two game district winning streak.

District 26-4A will have plenty opportunities for these Hawks to have one of their best district records.

 Year District Record
 2010 3-7
 2011 1-11
 2012 0-12
 2013 1-9
 2014 0-10
 2015 1-0

There are presently only two district teams with winning records and Cuero beat Wimberley on Friday by two points to put the Gobblers on top of the heap starting this season’s games.

Now Canyon Lake will play Navarro next Tuesday for a chance of tying that two game winning streak that was played over six years ago.
