Canyon Lake Lady Hawks beat lowly Gonzales on Tuesday night at the Hawk Nest, 40-25.
The Hawk defense was stout enough to hold the Apaches to just 6 points going into halftime, allowing CL to get everyone involved in this victory.
“It was a good solid victory,” Head Coach Mary Beth Gallagher started. “We were able to get a lot of girls playing time and it was a great team effort.”
Canyon Lake did not come out of the gates very fast as they were able to amass 8 points in that first quarter before a 14 point second quarter giving the Hawks enough breathing room.
“Our defense was solid,” Coach Gallagher said defensively. “We struggled from the free throw line and that hurt our bottom line for scoring.”
CL made 14 out of 39 attempts from the foul line giving you an idea of how dismal that part of the game ended.
As the Hawks go into their next few games, that free throw shooting will be critical in how this team will finish and giving CL a chance of more games.
Half the points came from the freshman tandem of Alexa Ramos and Reagan Heun. Heun ended up being the only Hawk to finish in double figures scoring 11 points.
“We are more developed as a team,” Sharpshooter Heun said. “We are just playing together as a team better and now we have to stay focused these next few games because we have the skills to execute.”
Ramos finished with 8 points and was also lethal on the defensive side of the ball with 5 steals in this contest.
Canyon Lake hit a wall at this point in the first round of district games. The Hawks will need to have better results than how games transpired earlier.
“We need to learn to go out and do what we have to do to execute,” Heun closed. “To be a freshman and be part of a team that has a chance of making the playoffs is good….we just can’t lose our composure.”
The Hawks find themselves in the thick of making a run for post season play and with another game of having less than 12 turnovers will be that one intangible that could help this young team realize a finish line with more to play for.
