Lady Hawks Beat Gonzales, 50-30
Canyon Lake Lady Hawks won their second straight District 26-4A clash last Friday night in Gonzales, winning 50-30.
“This was a good win for us,” Head Coach Mary Beth Gallagher started. “We know we have to beat the teams that we should beat if we are going to make the playoffs.”
The Lady Hawks reached 50 points in this contest as each quarter Canyon Lake reached double digit scoring.
“I feel this game will help our confidence in district play,” Coach Gallagher continued. “I felt like Kyndall (Drum) did a fantastic job on defense covering number 23 who is usually their leading scorer and Kyndall held her to just 4 points….Our post play has started to come together with Kyndall’s leadership and Sarah (Schneider) is feeling better and is back helping with our defense as well.”
Defense certainly helped in this contest as the bigs controlled under the basket as Mia Riali also had her way from away the basket with six steals.
“Mia (Riali) is a spark plug for us,” Coach Gallagher finished. “Mia sees the the court so well and really has a knack of disturbing the ball handlers and getting steal when we need them.”
“I believe Riali is such an important part of our overall game because she provided energy and hustle and sets the tempo for our aggressive play….I thought Reagan (Heun) stepped up as well, her point contribution in this game was invaluable, in she shows a little growth every day.”
Freshman Heun led the Hawk scoring with 18 points while Sophomore Mia Riali finished with double digit scoring with 10 points.
CL’s height was too much for the smaller Gonzales club as Senior Drum seems to be getting in game condition after suffering a pre-season injury after returning right before the Christmas break.
The 21 steals led by Riali was big as three other Hawks finished with 4 steals each. (Drum, Alexa Ramos, and Heun.
Youth is a big part of this year’s team as CL had two seniors (Drum and Kelsey Ahrens) contribute in this game.
Canyon Lake continued to have success with their pressure defense with some easy buckets which led to this 20 point victory.
The Hawks were also 8 turnovers less than their season average in this game giving the opponent less opportunities to grab momentum.
The Hawks now have a 2-0 record in district play and will play the District 26-4A front runner, Navarro (3-0), this coming Tuesday at the Hawk Gym.
A young team that does not lack intensity as this season matures.
