The Hawks have been warming up in the up and down weather pattern this past couple of weeks.
“At this time of year we are focusing in on getting quality running and conditioning is the key early in the season,” Head Boys Track & Field Coach Troy Moses said. “We don’t want to train and peak at the wrong time since track is different than a lot of sports based on having one chance, so we want to be our best come District.”
Canyon Lake lost some good Field event students last year and this might be an area where it will be someone breaking from the group for a banner year.
“This is an area where we need some improvement,” Coach Moses fielded. “We will have a few kids but they will be young….Heath McDonough in the high jump and Austin Kahil who threw the discus are qualifiers returning from last year.”
The Hawks have had some strong teams in the past in the sprints and with a very good Mountain Valley crew that are now freshman will hopefully continue that legacy.
“We will be looking to the few Seniors that we have on the team to help us in this area,” Coach Moses continued. “Josh DeVries, Hunter Lehmann, Blake Walker, and Garret Gurndi will have to step it up and lead the young kids.”
The Relays have also been an event where CL has had success and Coach Moses will certainly have some decisions to make as this part of the Hawks team will have competition.
“As mentioned before we are going to be young and we are looking for those kids to step up,” Moses passed the baton. “The 4×100 and 4×200 could be made up of mostly upper classmen but the 4×400 could be made up of mostly under classmen….we will have to see how things work out.”
Canyon Lake for most of their existence has not been strong in the distance as their have been glimpses of runners here and there, but on a consistent bases this might be a better year than most if some of these athletes can get their kick for a fast finish.
“We have a couple of young men that could be very competitive in the 800 meter run.” Coach Moses closed. “They are Senior David Pfaff and Junior Austin Camacho….David set the school record last year and is looking to improve on that mark.”
The track meet will begin with the 3200 meter run at 9am with the Field Events beginning at that same time.
After a break for lunch The 2015 Hawk Relays will be off and running at 1pm with the 400 Meter Relay until the final runner rounds the track with the 1600 meter relay later that evening.
Another Spring Sport getting ready to spring into action and this year it will start at the Canyon Lake Track.
Go Hawks!!!!
