Softball: CL Hawks Finish 5-1 at Navarro Tournament

After losing their first game of the season, the Hawks found themselves down by 5 runs in the second game of the day and last game in the Navarro tournament.

Canyon Lake then proceeded to rally on their next at bat and forged to the lead and game, 11-7 against Pearsall.

The win gave CL five out of six games as they finished fourth overall for the weekend.

CL had several good happenings for their first tournament of the season.

“I would have been happy with a split,” Head Coach John Gallagher said when responding if he was happy with the five wins for the weekend. “We finally started hitting today and we have some very good chemistry with this team.”

Canyon Lake relied on Alexis Robinson for pitching as she started four of the six contests.

In that final game with Pearsall, the Hawks went with Freshman Lauren Mentzer in the circle as she works through some arm trouble and Mentzer found it hard to get through the second inning.

Enter Robinson once again to help stop the bleeding for an inning that had several errors and costly runs for Pearsall.

The Hawks got out of that inning with a five run deficit and in the top of the third, batted around to eradicate the deficit and a one run lead.

“This is literally great,” Robinson said when responding to having another pitcher and not having the team to rely on her sink or swim. “I like being able to be a leader in the field, I had been struggling but after my home-run yesterday, I knew I had to get back to the basics and now I am back and feeling good again.”

Robinson was on base in each of her at bats, scoring three runs in the Pearsall win.

In the past, CL’s last four to five batters would be a large gap in their production from the plate and that in turn causes long rallies as a rarity.

So far this year, the Hawks, have responded with some confidence building at bats as this year’s club on base average is .367 for that part of their batting line-up.

Those numbers will keep a rally going and Canyon Lake unleashed two such innings in their win with Pearsall and another 5 run inning in their loss to Carrizo Springs that also allowed the Hawks to get back into that game.

Canyon Lake is averaging 8 runs per game and 11 hits per game and those numbers don’t represent 7 inning games yet.

Mentzer was in her zone as her hit with with the bases loaded was the catalyst that propelled the Hawks in their final game with Pearsall.

“I had not been getting good hits and I knew I had to be stronger on my swing,” Mentzer said. “I made some adjustments and I have started getting some good hits.”

Not all is good for the Hawks as they are also averaging three errors per game and fielding will need to improve as this year matures for a good run for District 26-4A play.

Canyon Lake will be back in action this coming Tuesday when Fredericksburg will be in town and the Hawks work on being a club that can compete in district.
