Softball: CL Hawks Run Rule Fredericksburg, 16-6
Canyon Lake run ruled Fredericksburg with an 11 run fifth inning turning the tide for an impressive win over nemesis Billies, 16-6 on Wednesday night at the Hawk diamond.

“We committed way too many mental mistakes early but our presence of mind to start hitting the ball and scoring in those late innings shows that this team is not out of it (any game),” Head Coach John Gallagher stated. “Their confidence grew when the Billies put a new pitcher in the game.”
All but one Hawk got a hit, all but two Hawks got a run batted in and all but two Hawks scored a run as CL spread the wealth up and down their line-up in that last inning.
Kirsten Jones had several slap happy hits and her first was placed beautifully right over third base. Jones did the trick again on a slap bunt right to the left side of the pitcher for another single giving CL a ton of confidence and kept the inning alive.
“I wanted to pull through for the team,” Jones said with a smile that would not quit. “It had been hard putting those balls down and I am glad I did it in this game.”
“We were letting each other know that we had the talent and time to come back,” Jones said when responding on the mood of the team when Fredericksburg took the lead on the 3-Run Home Run.
Canyon Lake was one run down (6-5) when they came to bat in what turned out to be the last inning.
Eleven runs later the Umpire raised his hand signaling, ballgame, after a wall scraper triple off the bat of Kelsey Ahrens.

“I’m glad I just got a hit to help my team,” Ahrens said after her two-run triple that ended the game. “We knew what we needed to do and after a rough inning, so we got together as a team and finished it.”
“We owed them,” Ahrens said in response to beating an old district foe. “We are strong all the way through our line-up.”
The last time CL reached the 16 run plateau was February 26, 2013 against Luling. The Hawks are averaging 8 runs per game and presently have their best record after 7 games in their history.

The Billies did respond with 3 runs in the top of the second inning when a misplayed ball in centerfield ended up costing Canyon Lake 3 runs.

In the next inning, Fredericksburg, had a one out three run home run that was smashed over the left centerfield wall.
Alexis Robinson then retired the next six batters until another Hawk error in the top of the fifth inning. The Hawks had two outs when two Billies reached base and a come backer to Robinson retired the side with no damage.
Canyon Lake had left the bases loaded in the fourth inning and found themselves needing a shot in the arm, which might have resulted when the Hawks returned the favor of retiring Fredericksburg in the fifth inning when they left the bases loaded.
The Hawks went to business the next inning and would not quit as the grass was starting to wear thin after 14 Hawk players walked to the batter’s box.
Game-Set-Match and an impressive win over a team that was due after losing two times to the Billies last season.
Canyon Lake will take their .393 team batting average to the Wimberley tournament this Friday starting at 8:30am.
