Softball: Hawks JV Rout Fredericksburg JV, 10-6

Not that long ago, Canyon Lake did not need to field a Junior Varsity team since they did not have enough players to warrant such an act.

Last year, the Hawks fielded their first full season JV team and did not find much success.

Yes, there was a good reason for that showing…CL had four freshman playing on the varsity.

Those players would have made all the difference in last seasons final record if the Varsity did not need those freshman playing.

This game with Fredericksburg shows how far this sport has progressed as Canyon Lake came back from an early deficit to win going away, 10-6 in a timed affair.

Addison Ray pitched a gem while giving up just one earned run as she only threw strikes in her last two innings.

That’s right, a balmy 78% of Ray’s pitches were strikes.

The Hawks did have 3 errors, but that is why this is a JV squad and games like this will prepare them for a great future at Canyon Lake.

Hailey Lucero, Cassidy Martin, and Ray also helped get the bats going at the top of the batting going a combined five hits on six plate appearances.

Add 7 walks and a hit batsman and you will have a lot of base runners that can score.

The second inning was huge in allowing Canyon Lake to take the lead for good. The inning was stopped after CL scored 5 runs with only one out recorded by the Billies.

Ray helped her pitching when she doubled that inning with the bases loaded, scoring Char Hutson, Cassidy Martin and Hailey Lucero.

Last year, Canyon Lake would have been the team looking at a lopsided score like our visitors.

This could be a good year for the Hawk’s JV squad and this could be good years coming when we are watching these players on the varsity.
