Hawks Break Leg in Drama with a Bear, 10-0

There was no drama in Friday night’s game with La Vernia, as Canyon Lake found that a mean Bear is a bad Bear losing, 10-0.

Canyon Lake first five district games had been decided in the last innings but on this night La Vernia decided to knock out the Hawks and in that 5th inning, if something could go wrong, then it did.

The game was controlled by both pitchers as Alexis Robinson was on fire, striking out 8 Bears in her 4 innings of work.

Two out of three batters in each inning was a strike out. It was a dominating time as La Vernia just could not catch up to Robinson’s fast ball.

Then a walk, hit batter started the 5th inning and it went all down hill after that. La Vernia had 5 hits, 4 walks, 3 players that reached base due to an error, etc.

The Hawks committed 5 errors in that 5th inning that quickly this ‘High Drama’ team a troupe that had not one but several actors breaking a leg. (not meant in a good sense)

Before that atrocity of an inning, Canyon Lake had squeaked out one hit from Kelsy Ahrens as her infield hit hit off the pitchers glove making a throw by the second baseman late.

Then Kat Weber was next and her hit was a line shot right up the middle, but the Bear Pitcher could only put her glove up for protection which turned out to be right where Weber’s hit was going resulting in a double play.

Softball is a game of inches and that inning had a possibility for CL to draw first blood and then who knows what could have happened.

“We have to get better on offense and defense,” Head Coach John Gallagher said. “We gave up tonight as soon as we gave up 3 runs and lost our focus.”

Canyon Lake will now have a week off before they start their second round of district games on Friday on the road at Yoakum.

What will be the resolve for Canyon Lake? Time will tell but one thing is for sure, the drama in those last 5 games was doused on this night by a lot of water making these Hawks unable to fly.
