Kelsey Ahrens’ Grand Slam Propel Hawks to, 7-6 Victory

Lauren Mentzer comes on to relieve Alexis Robinson and gets her first district win.

Lauren Mentzer comes on to relieve Alexis Robinson and gets her first district win.

Canyon Lake won another thriller this time over Cuero to draw their district record to even (2-2) at the conclusion of their second week of  district competition, 7-6.

“I had a good feeling about this game,” Head Coach John Gallagher started. “They kept moving the game up until they decided on a 2pm start. “I also felt good with our 5-1 lead.”

“Being on the road and seeing a team we had not seen before, tells you how good our team stayed together even after those errors that helped tie the score, they did not fold.”

This time, the Hawks, called on Freshman Lauren Mentzer in the 5th inning and she did not give up a hit with her stint in the circle.

“Lauren (Mentzer) came on and did a good job,” Coach Gallagher said the obvious.

Mentzer only had one walk in her 3 innings which gave Canyon Lake something that you just can’t emphasize enough.

All through CL’s history, the coach would have to depend on that player in the circle regardless of how her performance was during any game.

“We just wanted to change it up,” Gallagher said. “Robinson was pitching well but we just wanted to see what would happen…Lauren’s speed and her pitches were going lower in the strike zone.”

Canyon Lake did not trail in this contest as Kelsey Ahrens connected on a grand slam
in the third inning helping to stop her slump and in so doing, with fashion.

Ahrens and Carly Dubois also led CL with two hits each, sending a good sign as this campaign continues.

Carly Dubois stole another 2 bases, tying her with Tiffany Arredondo for top base stealer for the Hawks, it also increased her hitting streak to 7 games. That is only one more game from Ahren’s 8 game streak at the start of this season.

The Hawks find themselves in the middle of the pack now which was imperative after their first week’s of action when they found themselves 0-2, with those two losses coming by losing a lead in the final inning.

This game was tied in the fifth inning after Cuero scored 2 runs in the bottom of the fourth inning.

As the rain started to become apparent, in  the last inning, the Hawks had Robinson lead off with a single and Ahrens working a full count walk.

Then Kat Weber singled the bases loaded and with no where to put Hawk batters.

Mentzer would help her cause, with her next at bat, as she singled in Robinson bringing the winning run across the plate for these cardiac Hawks.

Canyon Lake has had four district games come down to that last inning as their drama continues.

When asked if all the games would be coming down with so much on the line in the later innings, Coach Gallagher said, “I hope not.”

The Hawks will now prepare for Wimberley at home this Tuesday night. The Texans beat La Vernia last week and it should be another exciting game.
