Hawk Softball JV Beat Gobblers, 7-6
Canyon Lake’s JV Softball team is still, relatively speaking, a new entity as the Hawks have not had enough players in the past to field such a club.
Last season’s JV team had three players starting on the Varsity squad as freshman and even for this season, CL has a pitcher playing a prominent role on this year’s Hawk team as a freshman.
Suffice to say, winning had not been something that came easily for this team.
On Tuesday night, the Hawks rushed out to a five run first inning and rode that Gobbler to the finish line, winning, 7-6.
Twelve players saw action with many of the key plays coming in those later innings when some of the players who started the game on the bench came through defensively in preserving the lead and win.
CLJV started the game scoring 5 runs with the first inning being halted with only one out being recorded by Cuero.
Yes, they have a 5 run limit per inning for JV games, hence only having one out.
Sophomore Addison Ray was in the circle and helped with some solid pitching as she threw strikes 68% of the time while only walking one Gobbler.
“I’m just trying to get three up and three down,” Matter of fact Ray said. “I just have to push through when I am out there.”
Conversely, Canyon Lake received 11 free passes from Cuero and with plenty of base runners that helped in this win.
Ray also had two hits with some power hitting a double in the second inning that started a 2-run rally and the eventual winning runs.
A key part of this game was in the fourth inning when right fielder Chandra Wise caught a screamer and then doubled up the Cuero runner on first for a double play.
“Whenever I saw the ball I did not want her to get a hit and then I just listened to my teammates,” Wise said wisely.
“I just screamed, ‘go one….go one’ at first,” Ray said with zeal as she recounted the catch and instructing Wise to throw the ball to first base for that second out. “Today was good and our defense played really well….this team has stepped it up a lot.”
That Gobbler that was doubled up, would have scored, with the next two batters producing a single and double, but with that defensive play, there was no score allowing Canyon Lake to finish the game with a win.
Now the Hawks are able to get some valuable playing time for these players that could only sit on the bench while the older players secured most of the action when there was just one Hawk team.
“I want to get better and listen to the coaches,” Wise continued. “We are having fun and even if we lose, we still play as a team.”
Canyon Lake has some potential as these players hone in on their skills and wait for their opportunity to play on the varsity….and if they do, then they earned it!!
Great win and Go Hawks!!
