MV Hawks Get Help from Hinze in ‘Ketchup’, 10-4
Canyon came without the Lake this week in their loss to the Mountain Valley Hawks, 10-4.
The Hawks started shaky as Canyon scored 3 runs in the first giving MV a wake-up call after winning their first game to start the season over this same team.
Grace Hinze was in the circle and Canyon started with the first four out of five batters reaching base. Giving up only 3 runs was a good omen as the start could easily been worse.
“My Coach always tells me to relax,” Hinze started. “Honestly in the first inning I was jittery and nervous because this was a big team and we were going for district.”
Hinze was all business like for the rest of this game as the Cougars only scored one more run in the last inning when this game was well in control.
Canyon had their catcher almost hit a round tripper on her first at bat but then Hinze was able to get her on an easy pop up for a pivotable out later in the contest.
“We had heard that Canyon had another catcher we did not face in our first game,” Hinze poured out. “So I started throwing my floater and then the drop ball and that helped get her out in her last at bat.”
Mountain Valley answered in their half of the inning scoring 2 runs on no hits as both walks scored with stolen bases and good base running from Marley Carrizales and Bailey Bryan.
Hinze started the second inning much like the first when CMS had their first two batters reach base with another walk and hit batsman.
Then Hinze started working like ketchup as she slowly came around to pitching a shut out for the next 5 innings.
A strikeout and double play helped squash that 2nd inning, leaving Canyon with a goose egg in the scoring column.
Another escape was in store for MV in their next inning as the Cougars started off with 2 singles and then, Hinze pitched 5 consecutive strikes to produce the next three outs, keeping the Hawks unscathed once again.
MVMS tied the score in the bottom of the third when Carrizales worked a walk and Maddy Puente would get her first of three extra base hits (double) to drive in the tying run.
Carrizales scored her first 3 times she came to the plate as she either started or continued a rally.
“I get excited from my teammates,” Carrizales said with ease. “When they get excited, then I get excited.”
“I wasn’t worried and I felt confident that we could come back and win this game,” Carrizales said while commenting on what the thinking by the team was when Canyon took that first inning lead.
A 1-2-3 inning on 13 pitches had Hinze pouring her ketchup all over the Cougars as their uniforms turned Red with another no score stanza.
Mountain Valley would finally put some distance between them and Canyon after scoring 5 runs and racing out to an, 8-3 lead in the bottom of the fourth inning.
That inning had MV batting around in their line-up and only accounting for two outs as the 5 run rule got the third out for the visitors.
Hinze had a walk and hit in her two at bats in this fourth as Puente and Kassidy Hicks both had doubles to continue their hitting for power routine.
MV had two triples, back-to-back in the 6th inning as Puente and Adrianna Peaslee did the damage which gave the Hawks a comfortable, 10-3 lead going into that final stanza.
“I was just waiting for the pitch and turning my hips into the ball,” Puente said like you were talking to ‘Pete Rose’. “I practice my swing while the pitcher is throwing and then I just have to be focused.”
“We play with heart and that helps give us effort,” Puente closed. “We cheer and talk on the field and that helped me feel confident that we could come back and win.”
Hinze continued her dominance ending the game with consecutive strike outs while Canyon had two players stranded on the bases.
Six of the nine Hawk hits were for extra bases as MV made the Cougars pay for giving up 8 free passes (walks) to elevate MVMS’s score into double digits and a win.
Mountain Valley will be going into their final tournament this week-end with just one loss for the season as this group of players continue to impress.
Great defense was also on display in this affair with a stout infield by Carrizales and Bailey Bryan batting every ball down and keeping the play in front of them which helped to get those important outs.
Congrats Mountain Valley and go get some fries with some ketchup, and don’t forget to bring the Hinze!!
