Game 1 for this year’s most significant game according to The ReSporter will go to the football game’s Bi-District win over District 25-4A first seed, Waco La Vega.
This was the second year in a row that Canyon Lake would make the playoffs with a losing record.
This would also be the second year in a row that your CL Hawks would prove their worth by winning in the first round.
Hawk Offensive Line opens gaping hole for Fullback Hayden DuBois
Two years ago, Canyon Lake had a dismal regular season as losses would continue to pile up on a team that had changed their offense and was in the throes of trying to figure out how to get that elusive win.
The Hawks had their longest losing streak ever during this 2012-2013 campaign as that number reached 9 games after a humiliating loss in their 6th game to Fredericksburg, 38-14, at home.
CL finished the year winning 4 of their last 6 games with some nice wins over Wimberley, Boerne, and Pleasanton.
Pleasanton was the Bi-District game against an Eagle team that finished 9-1, and a team that would have wished for anything but a Slot-T team to play in the first round.
The year before, Navarro’s Slot-T beat Pleasanton by scoring 76 points on this hapless Eagle team in their first round game, once again leaving a bad taste in the Eagle’s mouth after enjoying a 9-1 regular season record.
CL would also beat Pleasanton with a lethal offense that the Eagles still proved they had no answer for.
This year, Canyon Lake did have some success early in the season with two wins but then those close losses started in earnest in Wimberley after coming up short one point in that loss.
The Hawks would once again enter the playoffs as a number 4 seed with a chance of playing an opponent that came out of their district as the number one school- La Vega.
La Vega also had an up and down year, but the difference between CL and LV was when those ups and downs occurred.
Conversely, La Vega finished their season on a 4-1 jaunt and a share of the district crown and No. 1 seed by virtue of beating Burnet the team they shared the district title with.
Another reason for an all even record was how young a team La Vega was to start the season and then watching a team that seemed to be peaking right in time for when the real season started in the playoffs.

“Both La Vega and Canyon Lake were coming from districts that were close in competition from top to bottom,” Head Coach Drum said. “Taylor also was beaten by Liberty Hill by less than a touchdown and that just showed how close each team was on any give Friday.”
Canyon Lake had stumbled at the end of their season with two losses to Taylor and Boerne albeit by 2 and 7 points.
So the stage would once again be, what Hawk team would show up when the curtain would be raised on this night.
Canyon Lake had two kick-off returns on their win over Fredericksburg that helped propel a win on that night and with the Pirates, CL would release two interception returns for scores that would be an answer to why the Hawks would get this win.
Returning interceptions for touchdowns had happened only once (Doug Hubnik) in the history for the Hawks and on this night two thefts returned for scores was that deciding factor.
La Vega would jump to a quick 6-0 lead on their second drive of the game and it was a blown play by the defensive backs when the Pirate receiver was found all alone in the middle of the field for the 67 yard touchdown catch.
Canyon Lake would respond with two big runs that totaled 55 yards from Josh DeVries to answer. The CL touchdown also had Mr. Automatic (Mike Thorpe) kicking the pat and giving the Hawks the lead (7-6).
The Pirates would score again on a pass play early in the second quarter and that would give LV a lead again as they were thwarted on their two point try (7-12).
Then the Hawks would have 21 unanswered points to end the first half and start the second half with a TD and a 28-12 advantage.
La Vega had already proven that they could strike quickly and that is exactly how they played till the end of the game as their hurry up offense was, hurry up, for the rest of the evening.
La Vega would score and with a two point conversion bring this game to a one possession contest, 28-20.
Canyon Lake’s defense won their side of the ball, 14-7 but a touchdown by the Pirates came after a long Hawk drive and fumble return for 95 yards for LV which would put a whole new game in motion based on momentum.
Now the game would hinge on how well CL’s defense could keep another 2pt. pat for the Pirates from happening.
“That defensive play was one of the biggest plays for our defense,” Coach Drum surmised.
With the lead being whittled down to 2 points, the Hawks would need to keep this game from becoming another close nail biter loss.
Canyon Lake would have a DeVries touchdown run on the next drive as Canyon Lake would not punt in this game and each time the Hawks could get their hands on the ball, there would be at least 5 minutes coming off the clock.
In fact, with another interception returned to paydirt on La Vega’s next possession, Canyon Lake would score the last three touchdowns and end the game up, 49-26 and a chance to play again.
Tommy Clark and Cody Powell had the two interception returns on this night and they could not have happened at better times in this game.
Both of those plays accounted for 116 return yards and stopping a potent offense and taking the winds from the Pirates’ ship.
Canyon Lake amassed 410 rushing yards or 7.6 yards per play as DeVries, Hayden DuBois, and Robert Woods would do much of that damage and the Hawks had the most yardage by two running backs in the same game as a result (352 yards).

“We knew we could score and our offense just wore them down,” Coach Drum finished. “You have to be a disciplined ball club when you play the type of offense we run.”
Canyon Lake would win this game with their offense as they controlled the clock and with the two defensive scores the Hawks would have another game to play, this time in the AlamoDome.
