CL Hawks Win Silver Bracket at the San Marcos Rattler Tourney
Canyon Lake won the Silver Bracket Championship in the San Marcos Rattler Tournament that finished on Saturday.
“We won the Bronze bracket last year and we wanted to bring some hardware home tonight,” Head Coach Kim Paisley said proudly.
The Hawks swept three games on Saturday winning the final over 6A Weatherford Kangaroos in three sets.
A good week of Volleyball for the Hawks after upping their schedule to play in last week’s NEISD Tournament against larger schools.
“This was a good day…..great day,” Coach Paisley said as her voice was leaving her. “Hannah’s (Wunderlich) serving was on fire, she had good muscle memory and she was on fire….our defense is getting better and we are heading in the right direction.”
Wunderlich had 6 aces in her deck of cards in that first game as she finished with 9 for those first 2 games.
That 3-5 record in the NEISD Tourney is showing how it will benefit the Hawks as they proceed to their district schedule starting the middle of September, when they play Yoakum.
“Playing in that tournament (NEISD) is what helped our level of play as we had a chance to beat Keller that first day,” Coach Paisley said with conviction. “The tempo and caliber of teams were tougher.”
One victory on Saturday that had to be fun was the win over Bastrop where former Hawk Volleyball Coach Nicole Creek is now running the show.
Canyon Lake disposed of Bastrop in two sets, 25-17 and 25-16.
“The Seniors are the only players that played for or was under her coaching,” Paisley said when talking about the game against Bastrop. “The game was more emotional for them and that is there business…my business is to win.”
The Hawks started Saturday playing SA Southwest and lost the first game 22-25, that game had a CL 5 point lead at one time before their concentration left them and not regaining their momentum.
Canyon Lake proved that would not happen again after a ‘little’ pep talk from Coach as they smoked Southwest, 25-11 and 25-13 in the final two sets.
“I told them that there was no excuse for letting the ball hit the floor and not passing,” Coach Paisley said. “We did not wake up ready to play and I did not know if they were still stuck on the Blanco game or what….but in set two we got it together.”
Weatherford will be a force in their district and had some tall players, as this victory could help in giving the Hawks a shot in the arm as they now sport a 17-8 record with no more tournaments on the schedule.

Regan Mickey seems like and plays like a Senior, but that is what happens when a player makes the Varsity as a Freshman as she did.
“She (Regan) leads by example and leads by doing,” Coach Paisley praised. “We are trying to get Faith (Hasness) to that level by getting more reps.”
Hasness is playing on varsity her first year as a Sophomore.
Mickey finished the Saturday with 55 Assists while Bailey Drum and Addison Farley were both awarded for the All-Tournament Team.
“We came here with a goal…we came to get some hardware,” Coach Paisley closed. “I felt like we were solid and I wanted them to step on some throats and not let them breath.”
Certainly was evident on this day as several of the opponents were seen grabbing some inhalers after their games with the Hawks!! Congrats!!
Go Hawks!!
