Canyon Lake Freshman moved their record to 3-0 after beating San Antonio Cole, 16-8 on a rainy day at the Hawk Nest.

The game was delayed well over an hour before the teams would enter the field but the good news was the 79 degrees temperature when the kick-off, kicked-off.

CL Hawks would not take long before they would score on their first possession when Chance Martelli recovered a Hawk fumble in the end zone for the score.

Using the word recover is a misnomer as Martelle would just pick the ball off the turf and raise it in the air.

The score was put in motion when Trenton Lorett would have consecutive runs of 19 and 22 yards to help convert a 2nd down and 18 yards needed for a first.

Then the second run by Lorett that ended on the 3 yard line and a Martelli celebration.

Lorett was not finished as he kicked the onside kick-off and also recovered his kick to help keep the ball out of the Cougars hands.

SA Cole was a team that would not pass once in the game. This team did not even give a hint that they would ever pass no matter how much yardage needed for a first.

That did help the Hawk Defense realizing they could sell out and go for the running play each time a Cougar snapped the ball.

For the first half, Cole, only had 2 first downs and 35 total yards of (running) offense.

Canyon Lake had also stalled as the Hawks were only able to accumulate 9 yards of offense after their first drive that covered 59 yards.

The second half became a fumble affair as CL opened the half with a fumble on their second play that resulted in a return of a 77 yard fumble return and Cole setting up shop on the Hawk’s 18 yard line.

That fumble return would actually be the play that would insure Canyon Lake with a victory as Offensive Lineman Nathan DeLeon would run down the Cougar and keep him from scoring.

“There was a guy behind me that leaned into me and I thought they might call the play back,” DeLeon recounted. “I did not want him to score and I thought if I could tackle him then and help us win the game.”

DeLeon found his fountain of youth as he hit another jet stream in order to catch a player than had over a 20 yard advantage when the chase began.

“I just had to get the ball back and not let them score,” DeLeon finished.

That tackle did indeed save a score as Canyon Lake’s next defensive stand was impressive as the play by DeLeon seemed to motivate the whole team.

Cole’s next 4 plays after fumble return:
Play 1: Run with no gain.
Play 2: Run caused fumble and a loss of 2 yards.
Play 3: Run and a loss of another 2 yards.
Play 4: Run for a one yard gain and a loss fumble.

Canyon Lake would then take the ball again with new life and an 11 play drive covering 85 yards for a, 16-0 score when Connor Rose broke two tackles and what looked to be a torn jersey for a 4 yard run to paydirt.

SA Cole had a total of 32 yards up to this point when all of a sudden Mamere would take off for a 59 yard run and after the 2 point conversion a game had been phoenix, 18-8 with still over 4 minutes left in the game.

Canyon Lake would drain 3 minutes off the clock when SA Cole would once again have a chance of tying the score.

With a team that would not pass, Canyon Lake did another hold and the Cougars walked off the field with no time on the clock being 38 yards from a chance to tie the score.

This Hawk team seemed to have everything in control but an offense that seemed to stall helped keep this game much closer than it could have been.

This was a Freshman game vs. a San Antonio Cole JV team and that should help in giving this Hawk team more confidence as they get ready for a Wimberley Texan team for next week.

Nathan Ponce DeLeon helped in restoring the youth for this freshman team just in the nick of time.

Go Hawks!!
