JV Hawks Have Birthday Bash for Tigers, 18-0

CLJV had a birthday bash for Smithville on Thursday night as they methodically took care of the Tigers in their first home game of the season.

Right out of the gate the surprise Birthday was sniffed out as Defensive Back Tyler Bishop decided to jump on a gift from the Smithville Quarterback and took it home for a 40 yard interception return.

The interception was on the third play from scrimmage and the gift was opened and used for becoming the only gifts needing to be opened for the win.

“I knew they would be throwing a pass and I told Caimen (McDonough) to be looking for it,” Clairvoyant Bishop said.

Bishop celebrated his 17th Birthday on this night and what a present in the size of a oblong object being thrown in your direction.

“I was not going to let him get me,” Bishop said in responding to the Tiger chasing him after the INT. “It was great to get that early in the game….we really needed it.”

After the present was opened and enjoyed by the Hawks, the game continued with defense and more defense, as Smithville was only able to account for 4 first downs in the game.

“The defense shut down their offense,” Head JV Coach John Barthels said. “When we do it right, then we do it pretty good.”

One of many reasons for that solid effort came from one of many players to get in on the action early and often.

Linebacker Anthony Ozuna name was called several times in the Tiger’s first two possession to set the stage for a game that was controlled by defense.

“It feels good after last week’s loss,” Ozuna started. “We were looking for a win and getting that pass was great.”

Ozuna was talking about his offensive game as he caught the only pass of the night for a 6 yard touchdown from Michael Harwell in the second quarter.

“That pick (interception) really helped our team and the Coaches were telling us (defense) to run inside more because they were pushing us in and then going to the backside.”

Smithville’s longest play from scrimmage was a 9 yard run and that happened late in the third quarter.

Canyon Lake’s offense is still a work in progress as fumbles helped in squashing chances for more scoring in this contest.

“Our offense is getting there but we are not there yet,” Coach Barthels finished. “Our group got more fired up the whole game after that interception.”

The Hawks will be in action next Thursday at the Hawk’s Nest as they will work on improving their record and get the offense humming like the defense.

(The game was called in the 4th Quarter, after a Smithville player suffered a concussion on a Hawk offensive play…from talking to Coaches the young man was taken for precautionary reasons and will hopefully recover soon with support from Smithville and Hawk Nation Prayers)
