MV 8th A team Shoots Fireworks but the Badgers had more, 28-20
Mountain Valley 8th Grade A squad started with a bang but could not hold off the Badgers in a 8 point loss, 28-20.
Running Back Roberto Vargas started the game with a 40 yard touchdown run on the Hawks first offensive play but that excitement was greeted with some reality pills as Lampasas would answer all night until the end of the game with the lead.
That first drive for the Badgers had some good news for the MV when the defense forced a fumble giving the Hawks a chance to start with that one play drive.
Lampasas answered MV’s first score with a 6 play 47 yard drive to tie the game three minutes later in that same quarter.
Mountain Valley would have their longest drive in terms of plays on their next drive, going 13 plays and a 21 yard pass from QB Cody Kline to a wide open Vargas and another lead.
This drive had MV converting two 4th down plays before the pass play for a touchdown.
It took the Badgers only 2 plays to answer this time going 62 yards on just 2 plays and a tied score going into halftime, 14 all.
The Hawks could not take advantage of their first possession to start the game agains after intermission.
After converting the 3rd 4th and 2 play in a row, it was the next 4th and 2 that was smelled out by the Badgers and getting Kline behind the line after a busted play.
Once again, Lampasas took 2 plays again when they ran it in from 61 yards out, giving the Badgers the advantage.
Mountain Valley would come alive again scoring on a trick play that found Nic Riveral on the jet sweep and all those Badgers taking the bait and leaving Vargas alone down the field for a 63 yard pass and run.
“I felt confident that I would catch it,” Running Back Vargas stated confidently.
On Vargas touchdowns he totaled 124 yards total by pass and run. That yardage would equal over half of Mountain Valley’s yardage on this night.
On his 40 yard run, Vargas said, “I just hit the hole very fast and then just rans as hard as I could.”
That pass play was huge as MV was looking at a second down and needing 22 yards to convert to keep the chains moving.
The Hawks did not get that important extra point leaving the Badgers with a 2 point lead, 22-20.
Another long touchdown run for Lampasas on their next drive from 37 yards out would spell doom for a MV victory, but the Hawks would still have a chance to get a tie.
Staring at their 40 yard line, MV, would get 24 yards when an interception would finally put water on the that Hawk fire and calling it a night.
All total, the touchdowns by both team would be a big chunk of all the yardage totaling: 276 yards gained on those passes and runs.
A lot of fireworks, it was to the Hawks chagrin that the Badgers got the last chance to fire their rockets.
