CL Hawks “Bull”dozed Dogs, 42-7
Canyon Lake took the Bandera Bulldogs to a Poodle Kennel in win, 42-7 as the Hawks are now tied for 2nd place in District 14-4A-D1 race.
“We played a complete game and that is something we haven’t done this year,” Head Coach Charley Drum said. “I told the kids, it was now or never as it would be tough coming back from an 0-2 hole…We are playing with intensity just like last week and this will be a moral booster for the kids….I am proud of them.”
The Hawks rushed for their largest amount of yardage ever in this victory as CL passed the Marion total in a game played earlier this season.
Bandera transplant, Tanner Fairs, also eclipsed Eduardo Covarrubias longest run from scrimmage by one yard as he raced for 76 yards for a his second score in the first quarter.
CL went right to work, taking their first drive for 61 yards on 11 plays with Faris covering the last 19 yards for an inkling of things to come and a lead that would not be threatened by the Poodles, 7-0.
Faris finished with 172 yards rushing on the night on 15 carries as his old classmates have been a victim of his wrath for two straight years against the Hawks.
Last year as a freshman, Faris was just as lethal, when he scored twice in covering a 68 yard pass and 92 yards rushing in the game won by CL Freshman, 42-0.
It took Canyon Lake just two plays on their next possession as Faris outran all the dogs on the field for 76 yards and what would be enough points for the eventual win.
“Honestly, it was a busted play,” Faris recounted his 76 yard run. “I had to do a spin move as two players were coming to me but then I broke into the open and I just was thinking, ‘hopefully no one catches me from behind’, but I did look to the side and did not see anyone.”

Bandera did show life in their next drive, scoring on a 63 yard drive on just 6 plays as Bulldog QB Utah Hicks did most of the damage and scored on a 4 yarder and a 14-7 Hawk lead. The score was executed in the first quarter but that would be the last whimper from this Bulldog team for the night.
The Bulldogs would only be able to muster 120 more yards for the night as CL’s defense covered all the hydrants as the offense expanded the lead.
Junior Austin Brennan would break the 100 yard marker and scored on two runs as he covered 43 yards on one of those carries while finishing with 112 steps.
“This was a well deserved win,” Brennan said. “We practiced our butts off this week and we were really prepared for this game….we were just sticking with our blocks and went back to the basics and blocking and that was helping us move the ball.”
Early in the 2nd quarter, Senior Robert Woods would dislodge the bone from a Bulldog after a vicious hit on the Hawk 3 yard line which would stop Bandera’s last chance for a score and Canyon Lake would race out to a 28-7 halftime lead.
On that last touchdown before the half, QB Ben Fulton did his jump pass to Heath McDonough in the back of the end zone scoring with 18 seconds left before the Hawk Band would play.
“When I turned around there was a tight window to throw, but if I can get it to his hands then he is going to make the catch,” Fulton said with confidence. “He is the type of receiver that makes QB’s look good.”
“I just wanted the ball and as long as it is high then I can get it,” The 6’4 inch McDonough caught.
The Hawks would continue those hard hits as the special teams would also deny Bandera a chance to start the second half with the ball as McDonough caused another fumble and CL would be able to start the half on offense.
“I just run as fast as I can and I just start running from the sideline and that helps me avoid the blockers,” McDonough said on how he was able to get tackles on kick-offs. “We just need to keep doing what we are doing and practice this week is when we will win on Friday’s.”
Brennan would score on an 18 yard run right up the middle and a Hawk score with just 2 minutes into the second half, 35-7.
Canyon Lake would score once more when a Load of (Robert) Woods bulled over the dogs on a 5 yarder and final score, 42-7.
On getting more reps for offense, Woods said, “It was different and fun but now we need to take care of our next three games and now we can get on a roll…We will get pumped up in practice and get going and we will need to tell them, they (younger players) can’t slack in practice because that means you can slack in a game.”
Woods was also commenting on what the Senior players will need to do to motivate, as this season moves into crunch time.
“We talked about having sound defense and that we were going be running our fullback,” Coach Drum closed. “Our reserves played well and this game was just good medicine.”
Now the district race was jumbled up with 4 of the 6 teams now sporting, 1-1 records making the next 3 weeks an exciting time for many fans.
The Hawks will have 2 of those 3 games at home as they will host Fredericksburg this Friday as the field will fight it out for those precious playoff spots.
Go Hawks!!
